Today on a board there was a news report out by a company in regards to a class action law suit. How can I be sure it's legit?

This happened to me before on a different stock and they wanted all kinds of info about broker account including acct number and print outs of the transactions. If they're in charge of a law suit shouldn't they have a list of shareholders? Well anyway, at that point I bailed and never again responded. Does that sound right?
