Wanna know why a VERY high top tax rate works? Because it forces reinvestment. That's not theoretical, that's historical. During the time of greatest economic expansion in the US (for people in ALL classes), the top marginal tax rate ranged between 78% and 92%. This forced corporate executives to put profits right back in the company, since there wasn't much incentive to turn their corporations into a ponzi scheme. You know, like paying living wages, generous benefits, and investing in research and development and physical plant.
