Let's try again to clarify the whole side effect issue...
Unfortunately some incorrect information persists that "no side effects" means "no therapeutic effect" of a drug
From Drugs.com, the definition of side effect is usually regarded as "...an undesirable secondary effect in addition to the desired therapeutic effect of a drug or medication". In Sucanon studies, primary study variables were associated with blood sugar control, both short and long term. A secondary effect of decreased visceral body fat was also observed. Is this considered a side effect? Perhaps because it is a secondary effect to the primary study variable of blood sugar control. I suspect most with diabetes or in danger of developing it would not consider loss of visceral body fat an undesirable effect, though. In addition, the typical undesired effects common with many other diabetes drugs, weight gain, fluid retention etc were not observed in Sucanon studies. Therefore, while "no side effects" may be an oversimplification and it may be technically more accurate to say no negative secondary effects were observed with Sucanon use, as the positive effect of decreased visceral body fat is reported. In any case I don't see a conflict with the above side effect definition.
It is likely that both blood sugar and body fat effects are important in those at risk for diabetes or in early stages, especially considering many of the significant and undesirable secondary effects of many other oral diabetes medications.
Anyhow, I hope this helps clear up some of the apparent confusion on "side effects" and Sucanon
