I wonder if one of their VC partners demanded this after examining just what they had bought into.

I continue to view bolt as the US equivalent of Spiber(jp), a group of university students who are willing to scam funding agencies in return for their first lucrative employment.
This is harder to do in the US than in Japan as VCs tend to be less trusting and more demanding of third party verification.
