Question to GE answered re: FAA certification of LEAP following the announced sale of a LEAP engine to Chinese manufacturer COMAC ...

What implication does this announcement have regarding FAA certification of the LEAP engine(s)? Is this engine (LEAP-1C) subject to FAA certification?

Response from Jamie Jewell of GE ...

There is no implication to FAA certification. This engine is for flight testing and certification of the airplane, which will be done by Chinese authorities.

All LEAP engines will be jointly certified by the U.S. FAA and EASA in Europe. There is an agreement between China and the U.S. that China accepts FAA certification for engines operating in that country.
