My opinion is that automation can be done. The problem is using a new process that does not have a standard or guideline. Regulatory agencies must be made confident that a process can be defined and controlled.

You upload a part file, the cutter goes around, there's relatively little that can go wrong. In this process we’re melting metals at very high temperatures over thousand degrees C. Things are moving, things are distorting. There are so many other things that are changing in the process. As Mark said closed loop control may not always be the right answer because an aerospace company may have a hard time if each and every build is a little bit different.
