First of all, this patent is a great way to protect the technology. Surgibot looks VERY similar from a technological standpoint. So, it gives us legal leverage. Second, you NEVER get federal funding if you have even the slightest chance to raise the money yourself. It is like selling your soul, or in business terms, loaning money from the mob! Business is about leverage and connections. If you don't have to, don't give leverage to anyone!
