I took that post paraphrased as:

the last venture was very profitable if you used common sense as nothing goes up forever, and the same should happen here.

It seems to me that if people got "trapped" as you put it, it really was there own fault. All you had to do was look at the chart...the company had (and still does) an awesome business plan.
