The model has two components to it.

The article is HOSTED and PRESENTED by Seeking Alpha. SA needs content to draw and drive traffic. They can pay the author based on views or reputation or whatever. Or they can not pay anything at all to authors trying to get started building a reputation and a following.

Separately, any third party could compensate an existing or prospective SA author to write an article with a positive or negative slant regarding a given company. In effect, they would commission that article to be written, and presumably would have had the opportunity to edit that article before it was published. That compensation could be a flat $x, or $y per view, or a combination of both. Authors with bigger followings and/or higher quality articles can get higher values of x and y.

In this case, the author of the article is stating (we don't know if the statement can be taken at face value or not--make of this what you will) that he (or she) was compensated by SA (see second paragraph, above) but not by any third party (see third paragraph, above).

I don't really believe that SA has a "company line" that says that SA will only host articles that are positive or negative vis-a-vis a given company. SA is in the internet traffic business and, to a lesser extent, selling premium investment tools business and releasing info early business, not the influence investors to our way of thinking business.

If I could afford to buy all of them, I would not need to buy any of them and I sure wouldn't be spending time on the message boards!
