20 years ago home scanners cost $2,000. They started to sell fairly well when they dropped to $1,000. I bought one from HP to use in building websites around 1999.

Can you even buy a standalone consumer scanner now? Best Buy was selling them for $50 last I saw one. So basically you pay for the hefty cardboard box and shipping from China. The scanner itself is almost free.

Had a brainy engineer friend who started a company 30 years ago to make computer keyboards that sold for hundreds of bucks. Nowadays I throw my keyboard and mouse away every few years just because they get too dirty!
