I used to work on a golf course for several years back in my younger days.

There are several things to consider as others have pointed out.

One of the big things is the cost today of maintenance and the stricter use of herbicides.

The other thing is letting the rough go back to it's natural state. As in too bad you sprayed the ball now drop one if you can't find it or it you do play it where it lies.

As golf course maintenance goes up at some point the owner needs to think about the above.

We used to have a Par 3 course here that was a great learning experience for my son. The course is now apartment buildings.

That really sucked since we used to have a great time out there.
