Washington D.C. - Prescription drug abuse is an epidemic in this country according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Some U.S. senators are hoping to find room in the budget to help those who are abusing prescription drugs.

The statics are staggering-- in 2012 drug overdose caused more deaths than motor vehicle accidents among Americans 25-64 years old. Which is why some senators are saying enough is enough—more research is needed to fight this problem found in our communities.

Here’s what’s in the proposal; 68-million dollars to the CDC for the monitoring of high-risk prescription drugs and identify people who may misuse them. Just over 25-million dollars for a new initiative to expand treatment of opioid use with a focus on heroin and prescription opioids through a combination different therapies.

Also in the proposal is 54-million dollars for medical research through the National Institutes of Heath, for clinical research for other approaches to pain management that pose less of a risk for dependency.

Senator Tammy Baldwin from Wisconsin says one goal is for doctors to have more accountability for their patients.

“We’re seeing what appears to be a lot of uninformed prescribing practices and a lack of adequate monitoring so that one physician knows what another physical treating the same patient is doing,” said Baldwin.

The Obama administration already has a proposal out to increase money to these programs but this recommendation raises the bar on funding.

16 senators signed onto the letter—14 Democrats, and two Independents—no Republicans.
