Plug Power employs largest staff since 2008at American City Business Journals(Thu, Mar 26)
Plug Power has steadily increased its staff to more than 300 employees, the highest number since 2008 when a series of layoffs reduced the company's workforce.
Sifting through Plug Power's annual report, the Latham, New York fuel cell manufacturer had 326 employees, including 59 temporary employees, by the end of 2014. That's compared to 2013 when Plug had 214 employees. In 2012 the company had 156 employees.
Prior to the 2008 layoffs, Plug had a staff of more than 380 employees, according to SEC filings. A restructuring plan brought that number down to 208 to focus on revenue growth and improved operations for long-term profitability.
The homegrown public company manufactures fuel cells used to power forklifts in warehouses and distribution centers. It is opening to another customer base by producing fuel cells for refrigerated trucks and vehicles used to haul luggage at airports. Fuel cells are seen as an alternative to lead acid batteries.
CEO Andy Marsh has been working to set the company up to reach profitability in 2015 for the first time in the company's 17-year history. Last year, Marsh looked to diversify Plug's offerings with its own GenFuel stations - hydrogen fueling infrastructure - that are expected to be a larger part of their market. Customers include Walmart and FedEx.
The introduction of the fueling stations as well as the August 2014 acquisition of ReliOn Inc., a hydrogen fuel cell developer in Spokane, Washington, increased staff levels.
Plug's stock was sharing at $2.58 on Thursday.
