GENEVA — The city has not yet done an inventory at E-Waste Systems’ space at the Geneva Enterprise Development Center (GEDC) on Genesee Street to determine what — if anything — the company left behind.

The city Industrial Development Agency, which owns the site, locked the doors last month because the company defaulted on its lease, City Manager Matt Horn said.

“...[We’re] still working to resolve the lease issue,” Horn said last week. “I don’t have a good timeline as to final notice, but once that happens, we will inventory the space and begin working toward removal of any material. In my experience in the space, there are very few items I would classify as ‘hazardous.’ That said, we will strictly adhere to any DEC guidelines for materials that we discover with limitations as to disposal.”

The electronics recycler occupied some 50,000 square feet of space and typically filled it with mounds of televisions, microwaves, printers and computers awaiting disassembly. In June of 2014, when the Finger Lakes Times profiled E-Waste as its Business of the Week, the company had about 1 million pounds of material on hand.

What eventually became E-Waste’s Geneva facility opened as 2trg in April 2011. E-Waste acquired 2trg’s assets in December 2013.

Thirteen local employees filed suit against E-waste last month. They said the company stopped paying them Oct. 18, even though they continued working until the city locked the doors.

London-based E-Waste did not respond to multiple requests for comment on the payment issue. Horn said the city is still trying to resolve the lease situation.

“For now, we stand ready to support them but will begin developing plans for transition in accordance with the lease in the near term,” he said.
