I didn't notice them saying at what stage they'd want to partner either one. They'd need to partner the plasma-based version early, because costs are high to manufacture even trial-scale quantities. But I'd think they could hold on to the 2nd generation "recombinant" version a while longer to increase value. However, a partner for the first might want to deal for the second, so as not to to do the heavy market lifting only to be displaced by the better mousetrap.

Wonder how the IP is here. There must be some patents they control but do not have directly assigned to them, because they bought the technologies and then started to improve on them. Some of those improvements are detailed in the PNAS article, so I don't know if the trade secret route is viable. Perhaps one of those went by me in Floblu's strings of patent posts. Anyhow, for my own satisfaction, I might go digging.
