Bears can be dangerous. They are not adorable, cute, and cuddly critters. This woman had Timothy Treadwell syndrome, and like Timmy, paid for it. A word to the wise for those of you who live in bear country.

COLUMBIA, N.C. - A 67 year old woman was found dead in Columbia this week.

Now, investigators believe the bears she often fed on her property may have killed her.

Kay Grayson was known to members of the small coastal community as the bear lady. She often fed more than 10 bears at times that lived on her 12 acres of land, just outside of Columbia.

Deputies said they conducted a welfare check on Monday after friends became concerned. That's when they found evidence Grayson was dead.

And what they found on the scene has them believing the bears may have played a role.

"When the officers were doing the search of the area they saw numerous articles of clothing,” explained Darryl Liverman, Tyrrell Co. Sheriff. “That even went across a ditch that had a tree across the ditch and on the other side, when we were conducting the search. The first thing we noticed was what appeared to be human hair."

Grayson often called wildlife services and the sheriff's office because she was concerned about people hunting the bears, which friends said she considered her pets.
