SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Natural-gas futures rose sharply on Thursday after a weekly U.S. inventories report showed a larger-than-expected decline in supplies. Natural-gas supplies declined 236 billion cubic feet on the week ended Jan. 9, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said. Analysts polled by Platts had expected a decline between 224 bcf and 228 bcf for the week. Cold weather this week is likely to lead to "another substantial withdrawal" to be shown in next week's report, said Tim Evans, an analyst with Citi Futures. Natural gas for February delivery NGG15, +1.33% rose 3 cents, or 0.8%, to $3.24 per million British thermal units. The contract ended 10% higher on Wednesday.
