SHANGHAI—Chinese buy more cars than anybody else. Now, they are starting to rent them as well.

Chinese rental-car companies backed by U.S. names such as Hertz Global Holdings Inc. and Enterprise Rent-A-Car, are raising money and boosting spending to meet what analysts say will be a surge in car rentals and leases in China. That market is still only about a quarter of the size of the U.S.’s, where rentals and leases logged revenue of $24 billion last year, according to consulting firm Roland Berger Strategy Consultants.
