From comment section... consultnick

I was born in 1943 in Cincinnati Ohio, and endured years of "child abuse labor", starting at 9 yrs old, working for German orchardists and farmers, later on in gas stations and my dad's machine shop--all before 18, which gave me a phenomenal amount of experience, and prepared me very well for a great future. I loved every minute of it.

The labor practices of other cultures cannot be criticized from without, as every culture is a stand-alone structure that has evolved over thousands of years. Where I came from farm kids had chores and duties starting at 3 years old, and everybody felt that they were not only contributing to family welfare, but were also gaining skills. I started driving tractors at 10, and by 12 could repair them. Most young adults today call 911 if their car won't start--or dad!

Very sadly, most young adults today graduate with one or two degrees, but with zero work experience--causing enormous suffering in the workplace as everyone struggles to accommodate bratty and self-obsessed "kids" that do not know how to work with others--except with other bratty kids! I've hired them myself and suffered for it. I've also hired young folks from Africa who have worked as children, and they are phenomenal employees, with amazing work habits, boundless energy and respect for their jobs. Young Mexican folks are the same--I am amazed at the range of their skills, and how easy it is to teach them new ones.

BBC poking around to find flies in the Apple ointment is classically British journalism, while their own labor practices are still caught up in the 1800's. They need to sweep before their own colonial doors. Picking on tin production in Indonesia is stupidly narrow-minded--let's ask where the ducks, rice and vegetables come from in Chinese Apple worker lunches, and who does their laundry--this kind of inquiry is pointless, but yields high energy headlines and sells advertising.
