Macmillan CEO says new deal struck with Amazon
Book publisher Macmillan reached an agreement with Amazon.com (AMZN) on a multiyear deal for print books as well as a multiyear deal on the agency model for e-books late last week, Macmillan CEO John Sargent stated in an open letter to "Authors, Illustrators, and Agents." Today a portion of the company's consent decree agreement with the Department of Justice expires and the company will no longer be required to allow retailers to discount e-books, Sargent added. The deal with Amazon starts on January 5, 2015, and all of the companies other retailers will also be on the agency model, leaving Apple (AAPL) as the only retailer who is allowed unlimited discounting, Sargent said.
