I think your assessment is correct, but I can't tell which party is resistent to meeting. I assume it is the defendant and not the plaintif.

It only makes sense to share the information before the trial to get any easy issues resolved before the trial and so the lawyers can defend and respond. Otherwise, the trial would be a lot longer.

If one party is not cooperative bfore the trial the judge will be unhappy with that party. It's in everyones best interest to share appropriate information before the trial.
