Although the record date at this point is moot (the only important date for investors was the xdate which was last Monday) there are many people who mistakenly/cautiously believe that they need to hold on through the record date so you may be correct on today's sell-off. I also think that it being a holiday with only half-day trading brings out a lot of less experienced traders/investors with lower trading volumes that add to the volatility.
