Turns out the VIN number is not in the usual place on the rig as it was manufactured in 1980 before the VIN numbers were standardized in 1981. The VIN is likely there if you know where to look.
I stand by the fact that the right full owner is not in possession and is being denied possession, that to me sure sounds like it's stolen property...
