BREAKING: GOP-Led House Intel Committee Finds NO Benghazi Conspiracy
Jesse Berney | 19 hours ago

Shattering the dreams of conspiracy theorists everywhere, the House Intelligence Committee has just released the results of its two-year investigation into the September 11, 2012 Benghazi attacks that killed the American ambassador to Libya and three others.

Debunking a series of persistent allegations hinting at dark conspiracies, the investigation of the politically charged incident determined that there was no intelligence failure, no delay in sending a CIA rescue team, no missed opportunity for a military rescue, and no evidence the CIA was covertly shipping arms from Libya to Syria.

In the immediate aftermath of the attack, intelligence about who carried it out and why was contradictory, the report found. That led Susan Rice, then U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, to inaccurately assert that the attack had evolved from a protest, when in fact there had been no protest. But it was intelligence analysts, not political appointees, who made the wrong call, the committee found. The report did not conclude that Rice or any other government official acted in bad faith or intentionally misled the American people.

Previously, the Intelligence Committee had declassified a report that showed there was no credence to the dark theories that have become gospel to conservative activists, pundits, and elected officials, but this is the committee’s final report. The select committee appointed by Speaker John Boehner to investigate the tragedy is still working, although it’s unclear what it hopes to find that the long-established standing Intelligence Committee could not.

While the Intelligence Committee’s report should end speculation of dark conspiracies hatched in the halls of the White House, the far right is far too invested in the specter of Benghazi to let it go. Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina recently called for hearings in the Senate once the GOP majority takes control in January. The only thing likely to end Republican conspiracy mongering over Benghazi is for Hillary Clinton — the center of many of their theories — to declare she isn’t running for president.

And don’t count on that.
