While American manufacturers lobbied against stricter emission standards and higher mileage requirements, the Japanese quietly began building cars that complied with emerging standards and in the process learned how to make reliable cars. American manufacturers have caught on and are making competitive products these days.
The analogy falls apart at this point. Addressing pain without medication is a sea change that will be embraced by informed and aware consumers. Sadly, there's a lot that are not and perceived, longstanding remedies rule.
