Ford Turns Over Security to Biometric Authentication

Oct 28, 2014

Car security has always relied on keys and remotes, but Ford is reportedly aiming to make a big advancement toward protecting their vehicles. With a patent filed for a biometric authentication system, the automotive giant appears headed for a new-age approach to vehicle security.

Working in association with Apple’s Touch ID technology, the new system would be applied to the steering wheel to identify the driver of the car. This way, the vehicle would only start if the fingerprints applied to the steering wheel match the owner of the vehicle, with the capability in place for multiple users.

This system will feature a durable conductive material, according to the patent application, protecting the steering wheel device from moisture and sunlight. As the driver wraps his fingers around the steering wheel, the system will be able to measure the driver’s pulse as well for further ID verification.

Ford’s new direction could provide a sizable step forward in preventing car theft with biometric security measures.
