I'm not a biochemist and would love learn more about ligands.

I'll speculate: I think ligands probably don't involve DNA or nucleotides, but are glycoprotein and glycolipid structures.

Sugars are the key molecules used in constructing cell surface "signals" - complex branching trees made of eight or so sugars, beginning with mannose as a foundation.

I've heard that the difference between two incompatible human blood types is a single sugar molecule.
