Hi AZ1, in the case of Sherriff Joe ... he did sort of stretch the limits of the rules didn't he.

1. If you enter the country illegally, you can be detained while your case is awaiting adjudication. But that's not a fine or a prison sentence. That's just awaiting trial.

2. You can also be sentenced if you're found guilty of something while you were here illegally. I'm guessing that applies to about 20% of all illegal border crossers.
