Lions Gate (NYSE:LGF) says it will create five short films based on the Twilight franchise to be shown exclusively on Facebook.

The company says five up-and-coming female directors will be picked to direct the shorts.

What to watch: The development follows only a day after Netflix rattled the movie industry cage by announcing a plan to release its first feature film. Though using Facebook as a content distribution channel isn't a brand-new strategy, the Lions Gate plan raises the bar by involving a high-profile franchise. The studio also has the Hunger Games franchise in its back pocket if the Facebook shorts perform well.
