OBAMA ECONOMY RATING A DRAG ON DEMS

Latest POLITICO battleground poll of likely voters in competitive House and Senate races out this morning finds the economy dominates as the key issue in 2014. And President Obama is serving as a big drag on his party. Among the troubling findings for Democrats: 54 percent say the nation is on the “wrong track” to just 19 percent who say it’s moving in the “right direction”; 56 percent disapprove of Obama’s job as president and 57 percent disapprove of his handling of the economy. Of course, Democrats benefit from the fact that Republicans in Congress rate even lower. And in the generic ballot question, the parties are pretty much dead even. They also break even on who is most trusted to handle the economy.

The irony is the data should probably be better for Democrats. The economy continues to create jobs at around 200K per month (August was probably an outlier). And recent data suggest sold third quarter growth. The U.S. is outperforming much of the rest of the developed world. But the White House and Congressional Democrats get very little credit it for it. This is likely because wage growth still lags and the scars of the financial crisis run deep. And it doesn’t seem like it will ever change.
