Two reasons I can think of immediately are:

1. EPGL had already signed the deal with Cooper before Novartis and Google had reached out to them.

2. EPGL recognized the deal with CooperVision would allow them to grow even larger and produce the products they wanted to.

CooperVision is taking all the risk here for what? Because they know what EPGL has and how important it is.
