I was at a big tourist site in WY earlier this year and there were busloads of Chinese tourists and many were using iPads as cameras. I think that using a tablet as a phone is awkward, and it reminds me of Maxwell Smart using his shoe-phone.

I do use tablets from time to time for phone calls but it's with a BlueTooth or Wired headset. We got rid of landline service a while ago and we use old iPads for phone calls using Google Hangouts. They can accept incoming and outgoing calls and US calls are free and international calls are very inexpensive. We use them in speakerphone mode or with a headset.

The rest of my family has Android phones and Google, curiously, doesn't provide the calling feature for Hangouts on Android phones and tablets - just for iOS devices.
