Just a teeny bit of research often helps in such circumstance - glad to help Kruz, suggest you shut down the cruise control.

End run

Look up end run in Wiktionary, the free dictionary.

In gridiron football, an end run is a running play in which the player carrying the ball tries to avoid being tackled by running outside the end of the offensive line. It is distinct from a dive, which is a run "up the middle", or an off-tackle run, which is a run through the inside gap created by the offensive tackle.

Colloquially, it has come to mean an attempt to avoid a difficult situation by dodging it without confronting it directly, or to attempt to circumvent someone's authority by appealing to a different authority.[1][2]

SIDEWAYS

What does it mean to come at someone sideways?

Best Answer

It implies that the approach is unexpected at least, and possibly intentionally deceptive.

Haven't heard that expression in a long time! It means to be subtle in your approach instead of going in full steam ahead.

It would be great if we could converse and just say what we mean, but some people get their feelings hurt easily, so if we want to avoid a huff, we go at that person sideways.

Kruz, in some parts of society, the current slang also means approaching someone sideways - rudely or with disrespect.

In academia, I would suggest that coming at a professor sideways, would be a co-ed using her natural female wiles by smiling and presenting her best assets attractively, or provocatively, in a very subtle but productive manner, in a lecture hall, in the hope of receiving a higher grade from the professor than deserved. Happens more often than one could ever imagine and is very easy to spot, so to speak. Get it?
