Everything I've read says people with Ebola are only contagious while they show symptoms of the disease.

See here:

Now, what's really scary and could keep this thing going in Africa are: (1) continuing to eat bat and bush meat (the probable animal source of the virus); (2) continuing traditional burial practices for Ebola victims; (3) chasing out foreign aid workers with machetes; (4) thinking the whole thing (Ebola) is a Western hoax, and not keeping quarantine

Ebola should burn out on its own, since (1) virus is only transmitted by fluids; (2) virus is only transmitted when patients show symptoms (or are dead); (3) virus is not airborn, and doesn't survive for long outside of a host

But overcoming the cultural things are the hardest.

I do agree Ebola will probably be around for a while the way things are going, and perhaps testing some experimental therapies might be possible for a while longer (6 months sounds right).

However, who thinks it will be feasible to run a trial when many of the people think the whole thing is a Western hoax, or chase foreign health / aid workers out of town with a machete?
