Anti-inflammatory drug stops Parkinson's neuron loss in rats in Fierce Pharma, July 29, 2014, | Emily Mullin
Excerpts: "An experimental anti-inflammatory drug delivered via a shot in the skin prevents neuron loss in rats with Parkinson's disease, according to a new study by researchers from Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta.
A growing body of research connects inflammation to the progression of Parkinson's disease, the investigators say, suggesting that an anti-inflammatory agent may hold promise for treating the debilitating disease at its early stages.
The drug tested by the Emory scientists, called XPro1595, targets tumor necrosis factor (TNF)--a critical inflammatory signaling molecule--to protect neurons and reduce motor deficits in a rat model of Parkinson's disease."
"XPro1595 is licensed by Scranton, PA-based startup FPRT Bio, which acquired the investigational drug from Xencor and is seeking funding for a clinical trial to test the drug's efficacy in the early stages of Parkinson's disease"
