ICTAS offers unique capabilities in each of these areas, highlighted by its partnerships with organizations such as the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The advancement in the field of big data focuses on the IARPA-funded Early Model-Based Event Recognition using Surrogates project, which uses social media and other open source data to generate real-time world event forecasts. The work of the national security thrust with unmanned aircraft systems has warranted Virginia Tech being named an FAA Test Site, supporting research and testing efforts aimed at integrating unmanned aircraft systems into the national airspace. Drawing on steady growth, the institute has expanded to the National Capitol Region, and also has three facilities in Blacksburg, Va. The Nanoscale Characterization and Fabrication Lab, located in the CRC, is equipped with more than $14 million in highly specialized analytic tools.
