We were playing football when one of the

kids spotted a large preying mantis on the part of the yard that we were playing on. The kid that lived there ran to the garage and came back with a shovel, everyone started shouting not to kill it. Someone placed the shovel down on the tip with the back about an inch away. That praying mantis wanged that shovel with an audible ping over and over until it was coaxed onto the shovel and dropped in the bushes.

They obviously have some structure in the front of their head that protects them as he didn't appear to harm itself.
