Steipp's pursuit of the golf club business, as opposed to something more mature, comes from the fact that he and the other officers at LQMT have plenty of time to play golf (what else are they doing?), and have achieved a level of expertise in that area that they have not achieved in, say, marketing or successfully executing a business plan to the benefit of their shareholders. In fact I think I recall him waxing on and on about his love of the game as the motive for his relentless pursuit of that market.
Well that sure worked out well.
