The brand name Endocan(TM) was chosen by the Board as a direct reference to the endocannabinoid system of the human body. The endocannabinoid system is a group of neuromodulatory compounds and their receptors that are involved in a variety of fundamental physiological processes including pain-sensation, immune function, stress, sleep, mood, appetite, and memory. Cannabinoids from plants, including those found in the Cannabis genus, as well as those autonomously produced within living biological systems, work together in the operation of the endocannabinoid system. There are over 525 natural components found in the Cannabis plant. Cannabinoids are believed to be at least 85 if not over 100 of these natural components. These components interact with specific receptors called “cannabinoid receptors.”
Two receptors have been found to date, called CB1 and CB2. The cannabinoids are separated into subclasses:
The cannabinoids mentioned most often are Tetrahydrocannabinols (THC) and Cannabidiols, for the simple reason that they are more frequently occurring in most strains and produce the most activity in the body. A substance that occurs naturally in the brain and binds to CB1 receptors was discovered in 1992 by Raphael Mechoulam’s team at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. This substance is called “anandamide.” Other naturally occurring substances that bind to CB1 have been discovered since then. Together, they are called the “endogenous cannabinoid system” or the “endocannabinoid system.”
The cannabinoids most useful in combatting the world’s devastating illnesses are THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol), though other cannabinoids are beneficial as well. Major ailments, such as squamous and basal cell carcinomas, respond very positively to the topical application of oil extracted from the cannabis plant and containing high concentrations of THC. A major ingredient in our skincare products is hemp, which is a distant cousin to cannabis. Its main ingredient is the non-psychoactive cannabinoid called cannabidiol or CBD. Industrial hemp is characterized as being low in THC (delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol) and high in CBD. CBD’s anti-cancer potential is currently being studied actively. It also has been shown to suppress inflammatory and neuropathic pain, exert anti-convulsant effects, and control other types of chronic pain, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information. While CBD is important in treating certain ailments, the skin benefits most from the Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acids that are found in hemp.
The use of cannabis is thought to stretch back 4,000 years. It has been used as a medicine globally, including India, China, and the Middle East. In China, it was used to treat malaria, constipation, and rheumatism. There are even theories that cannabis use appears in the Old Testament of the Bible.
In the middle of the nineteenth century, doctors began to take an interest in it as a medicine, and it was a popular choice. Even Queen Victoria of England was given cannabis by her doctor to relieve period pains. Beginning in the early 20th century, cannabis began to be made illegal around the world, including North America and Europe.
The recreational use of cannabis has continued through today, and scientists and doctors have started studying the medicinal benefits of the plant as well. The first country to federally legalize cannabis for medicinal use was Canada in 2000. The first state in the U.S. was California in 1996. Twenty states and the District of Columbia have legalized medical cannabis in the United States and additional states are considering doing so as well.
