Last night on "Coast to Coast", hosted by Georgy Noury, one of the segments was about TWA Flight 800 (or was it 600)? In any event, that incident is one of the biggest coverups in U.S. history. The guest opined that their ability to feed the public a line of baloney and have the public swallow it, pretty much allows the Government to do what it wants and think it can get away with it. Let's assume that George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, their staffers, and every member of Congress for the last dozen years has always acted with pure motives in the realm of national security. Say they've used the power they've claimed, the technology they've developed, and the precedents they've established exclusively to fight al-Qaeda terrorists intent on killing us, that they've succeeded in disrupting what would've been successful attacks, and that Americans are lucky to have had men and women so moral, prudent, and incorruptible in charge.

Few Americans believe all of that to be so. Combining the people who didn't trust Bush and the ones who don't trust Obama adds up to a sizable part of the citizenry. But even if all the critics were proved wrong, even if the CIA, NSA, FBI, and every other branch of the federal government had been improbably filled, top to bottom, with incorruptible patriots constitutionally incapable of wrongdoing, this would still be so: The American people have no idea who the president will be in 2017. Nor do we know who'll sit on key Senate oversight committees, who will head the various national-security agencies, or whether the moral character of the people doing so, individually or in aggregate, will more closely resemble George Washington, Woodrow Wilson, FDR, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, John Yoo, or Vladimir Putin.

What we know is that the people in charge will possess the capacity to be tyrants -- to use power oppressively and unjustly -- to a degree that Americans in 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990, or 2000 could've scarcely imagined. To an increasing degree, we're counting on having angels in office and making ourselves vulnerable to devils. Bush and Obama have built infrastructure any devil would lust after. Behold the items on an aspiring tyrant's checklist that they've provided their successors:

•A precedent that allows the president to kill citizens in secret without prior judicial or legislative review
•The power to detain prisoners indefinitely without charges or trial
•Ongoing warrantless surveillance on millions of Americans accused of no wrongdoing, converted into a permanent database so that data of innocents spied upon in 2007 can be accessed in 2027
•Using ethnic profiling to choose the targets of secret spying, as the NYPD did with John Brennan's blessing

•Normalizing situations in which the law itself is secret -- and whatever mischief is hiding in those secret interpretations
•The permissibility of droning to death people whose identities are not even known to those doing the killing
•The ability to collect DNA swabs of people who have been arrested even if they haven't been convicted of anything
•A torture program that could be restarted with an executive order


Even if you think Bush and Obama exercised those extraordinary powers responsibly, what makes you think every president would? How can anyone fail to see the huge potential for abuses?

I am not saying no one would resist a tyrant. Perhaps Congress would assert itself. Perhaps the people would rise up. Then again, perhaps it would be too late by the time the abuses were evident. (America has had horrific abuses of power in the past under weaker executives who were less empowered by technology; and numerous other countries haven't recognized tyrants until it was too late.) Part of the problem is how much the Bush-Obama paradigm permits the executive to do in secret. Take that paradigm, add another successful 9/11-style attack, even after many years of very little terrorism, and who knows what would happen?

No one does.

That's because we're allowing ourselves to become a nation of men, not laws. Illegal spying? Torture? Violating the War Powers Resolution and the convention that mandates investigating past torture?

No matter. Just intone that your priority is keeping America safe. Don't like the law? Just get someone in the Office of Legal Counsel to secretly interpret it in a way that twists its words and betrays its spirit.

You'll never be held accountable.

This isn't a argument about how tyranny is inevitable. It is an attempt to grab America by the shoulders, give it a good shake, and say: Yes, it could happen here, with enough historical amnesia, carelessness, and bad luck. We're not special. Our voters won't always pick good men and women to represent us. Some good women will be corrupted by power, and some bad men will slip through. Other democracies have degraded into quasi-authoritarian states; they didn't expect that to happen until it was too late to stop. We have safeguards to prevent us from following in their footstep. Stop casting them off because you fear al-Qaeda. Stop tempting fate.

Stop acting like the president takes an oath to keep us safe, when his job is to protect and defend the Constitution. Doing so keeps the American project safe. Past generations fought monarchies, slaveholders, and Nazis to win, expand, and protect that project. And we're so risk-averse -- not that we're actually minimizing risk -- that we're "balancing" the very rights in our Constitution against a threat with an infinitesimal chance of killing any one of us? That makes about as much sense as the 5,000 American lives lost when the same ruling class that built the national-security state found it prudent to preempt a perceived threat from Iraq. And we still trust them?

"We have suffered several thousand casualties from 9/11 through today. Suppose we had a 9/11-level attack with 3,000 casualties per year every year. Each person reading this would face a probability of death from this source of about 0.001% each year," Jim Manzi once pointed out at National Review. This is why we're letting the government build an Orwellian spy state more sophisticated than any in history?

Manzi went on:

To demand that the government "keep us safe" by doing things out of our sight that we have refused to do in much more serious situations so that we can avoid such a risk is weak and pathetic.

He was speaking of torture, but the logic applies more generally.

I am not saying that terrorism poses no threat -- of course it does. Of course we ought to dedicate substantial resources to preventing all the attacks that can be stopped without violating our founding documents, laws, values, or sense of proportion. For the national-security state, loosed of the Constitution's safeguards, is a far bigger threat to liberty than al-Qaeda will ever be. Vesting it with more power every year -- expanding its size, power, and functions in secret without any debate about the wisdom of the particulars -- is an invitation to horrific abuses, and it renders the concept of government by the people a joke. The ruling class is trying to keep us ignorant of what it's doing on behalf of us, because it doesn't want us to object!

You'd think, listening to those who defend the national security state's expansion, that the excesses detailed in the Church Committee report never happened; that the horrific abuses of our own era never happened; that the FBI and the CIA have unblemished records respecting the rights of Americans. In fact, America always overestimates its ability to anticipate and preempt abuses.

Yet Americans think they're special. If you doubt that, ask yourself what the average American would say if they heard about China pulling call records on millions of innocent Chinese people.

"Those authoritarian Communists."

We go easier on our own.

America has stepped back from the brink in the past when wars ended. But we've never had a "war" go on this long -- and there's no end in sight. It's time for the people to pressure their elected representatives, so that, through Congress, we can dismantle the infrastructure Bush and Obama have built. In less than four years, an unknown person will start presiding over the national-security state. He or she will be an ambitious power seeker who will guiltlessly misrepresent his or her character to appeal to different voters, lie countless times on the campaign trail, and break numerous promises while in office. That's a best-case scenario that happens every time!

For once, let's preempt that threat.

If the U.S. government gives ANY citizen, no matter how long the "path" and how many hoops they must jump through to get citizenship, they are throwing law and order out of the window.

They are making a mockery of international law.

An activist knows that he/she needs all the allies that come his/her way. However, most are programmed for destruction. It’s fine to mention the Military Industrial Complex (MIC) and their dangers; however I will take an aside from Albert Camus here. Events and affects are not linear. The MIC is organized by think tanks, which are more appropriately called policy institutes. There, the corporatism media and corporatism academia, public and private: intermingle, cross-pollinate, and cooperate.

One of the results is what is put forth in Political Science courses. In the ‘60s the slang for this was poly-sci. When I observed what was really taught, I tabbed it poly-sci-fi. (I still usually have to explain this to folks.) Political spectra are NOT linear. Its whole inception is pure Hegel. The thesis and antithesis of left and right is an example of planned opposition. How do I know this? Observe the synthesis: the left is the right. Well, I just slaughtered many folks’ sacred bovine, but someone has to be the hatchetman and the trumpet blower.

When one looks at highly influential folks in the arena of politics, over the past decades, and looks at their resumes, before and after, one sees the world of academia. The quintessential example would be Zbigniew Brzezinski. Is he left or right? Pundits on both “sides” have never been able to give an answer. Here the media follows the academia to select the approved talking points for the populace. The populace seems to never see the policy institutes behind the curtain and thus the machinations of the MIC. They understand Camus and therefore practice patient gradualism. Their goals are really never finally accomplished. The activist must be the same way. Any victories are transitory. At the end of The Plague, Camus noted, “the rats will return to the city.” Therefore, we must always keep trying. There is always that hope that activists will be focused upon the task at hand and not be infected with any sort of MIC disease.

Common thread runs through deadly assaults

EL AVIV – There is a common threat that links the Sept. 11, 2012, Benghazi attack to both the Boston Marathon bombings and the terror assault on the In Amenas gas facility in southern Algeria in January.

The thread runs through al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, or AQAP, one of the most deadly members of the al-Qaida conglomerate. AQAP previously attempted several major attacks within the U.S.

The group was the first al-Qaida member to comment on the Benghazi attack, releasing a statement arguing the assaults on the U.S. mission and nearby CIA annex were revenge for the death of Abu Yahya al-Libi, one of the most senior al-Qaida operatives.

AQAP did not directly claim responsibility for the Benghazi attacks.

Al-Libi, of Libyan descent, was believed to have been killed in Pakistan in June 2012.

Lost in the news media coverage about the U.S. response to the Libya attacks was that one day before the assaults, on Sept. 10, 2012, al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahiri released a video calling for attacks on Americans in Libya to avenge the death of al-Libi.

The 42-minute video announced the death of al-Libi. Released on a jihadi online forum less than 18 hours before the Benghazi attack, Zawahiri urged jihadists, and particularly those in Libya, to avenge the killing of al- Libi.

“His blood urges you and incites you to fight and kill the crusaders,” he said.

Last week, CNN quoted sources disclosing several Yemeni men belonging to AQAP took part in the Benghazi attacks.

One senior U.S. law enforcement official told CNN that “three or four members of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula” took part in the attack.

Another source quoted by CNN as being briefed on the Benghazi investigation said Western intelligence services “suspect the men may have been sent by the group specifically to carry out the attack.”

“But it’s not been ruled out that they were already in the city and participated as the opportunity arose,” continued the CNN report.

CNN further quoted one source revealing counter-terrorism officials learned the identity of the three men and later traced them to northern Mali, where they are believed to have connected with the jihad organization led by Moktar Belmoktar.

Belmoktar, an Algerian, is a senior leader of the Islamic Maghreb. He claimed responsibility for the Algeria gas facility attack in January in which 38 people were killed during a three-day siege.

Another intelligence source told CNN that Belmoktar had received a call in the aftermath of the Benghazi attack from someone in or close to the city.

The person on the other end of the call stated, “Mabruk, Mabruk!” meaning “congratulations” in Arabic, according to the source.

Boston bombing link

Meanwhile, AQAP has also been tied to the Boston bombing.

AQAP is behind Inspire magazine, the periodical thought to have provided bomb-building instructions for Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the accused Boston Marathon terrorists.

AQAP previously attempted attacks on U.S. soil. One such attempt was the 2009 Christmas Day plot by a Nigerian recruited by the group to blow up a plane flying into Detroit. That attack failed when the suspect’s device malfunctioned.

In October 2010, AQAP reportedly attempted to blow up planes destined for the U.S. using printer bombs disguised as air cargo. The plan was thwarted after a tip from Saudi intelligence.

In April 2012 it was reported that a British informant working for Saudi counter-terrorism thwarted an AQAP plot to bomb a U.S-bound airliner.

and 2012.

Although these alleged plans appear to be
moving slower than initially intended,
Bashar al-Assad's days as the Dictator-for-Life
of Syria do appear to be numbered - and the
plans noted in the memo cited by Clarke would
appear to be on track. I originally ran this clip

occult connection with the date, March 19.

AMERICAN PASTOR IN SOLITARY CONFINEMENT

More than ten years ago, Saeed Abedini, a 32-year-old Christian and American citizen, labored tirelessly to establish a network of home groups in Iran. Since Christian prayers were not allowed in public churches in the country, the home groups became the gathering place of Christian converts.

After being arrested in 2005 for his activities, he was released, having pledged never to evangelize in Iran again. He and his family returned to the United States and took up residence in Idaho. The summer of 2012 he returned to Iran to establish and build a state-run, secular orphanage. Upon arriving he was promptly arrested and imprisoned for “acts against the national security of Iran.” After spending months in confinement without any official notice of charges, without representation, and even without his presence in the courtroom, he was sentenced to eight years in prison. This last Monday marked his 215th day of imprisonment.

Just recently he was put in solitary confinement following a “peaceful, silent protest” in an outside courtyard of Iran’s notoriously brutal Evin prison. A petition signed by Abedini and other prisoners, decrying the lack of medical care, threats, and harsh treatment facing family members who come to visit, resulted in their isolation. Now family members fear the severe conditions have resulted in a dramatic deterioration of his physical and mental condition.

“Saeed had previously told his family that when he was in solitary confinement in the past, that was the hardest time in his life. That every hour was like one year and that he was losing his memory and his health was deteriorating quickly,” said his wife, Naghmeh Abedini, who is at the family’s home in Idaho with their two young children.

“We believe that he is being beaten in solitary confinement. We have no way of finding out about his health. There will be no more visitations allowed and we will have no way of knowing how Saeed is doing,” she said.

As a result of frequent beatings Abedini has, for months, been suffering from internal bleeding, according to his supporters. Now there is concern that his kidneys are no longer functioning properly. As of this week he is no longer permitted to have visitors, increasing the family’s anxiety over his worsening condition.

“We know that a tactic used by the Iranians is to place prisoners in solitary confinement in an effort to get them to give into the demands of prison officials—in Pastor Saeed’s case, to recant his Christian faith.”

As his family and attorneys continue to pressure the U.S. State Department, seemingly without much success, and other public and private groups to facilitate his release, it is clear that due to harsh conditions he won’t be able to hold out for much longer.

The complicated and “soft” diplomatic efforts of the present Administration toward Iran have only served to diminish any negotiating power that could save this man’s life. The attitude of appeasement and “sensitivity” toward Iran’s outrageous actions and statements have only served to project an air of weakness in the “War of Words” between Iran and the U.S. The Abedini family is experiencing firsthand the results of a failed foreign policy that can’t even protect its own citizens. Where is the outrage that a U.S. citizen is being denied adequate medical attention? If Iran doesn’t want him in their country serving the poor and orphaned, then send him home. But he is a U.S. citizen. Treating our citizens poorly used to carry with it dire consequences to all involved. No man left behind. But in these days of appeasement and “tolerance,” the few are sacrificed for the Policy. What have we come to? Is this really the country we want? Where is the outrage? And where is our government at times such as this? Mr. Obama, bring Saeed home before it is too late.

Investigators Unsure Whether Evidence Means a Woman Aided in the Attack; Russians Allege Suspect's Ties to Jihadists

Investigators have found female DNA on at least one of the bombs used in the Boston Marathon attacks, though they haven't determined whose DNA it is or whether its presence means a woman helped the two brothers suspected in the bombings, according to U.S. officials briefed on the probe.

In another development, Russian officials revealed details about contacts between the older brother and suspected Islamist radicals in the Caucasus, including Internet exchanges that led to concerns by investigators that he was trying to join up with jihadist fighters.

Speaking Monday about the DNA discovery, the U.S. officials cautioned that there could be multiple explanations for why genetic material from someone other than the two bombing suspects—Tamerlan Tsarnaev and his younger brother, Dzhokhar—could have been found on remnants of the exploded devices. It could have come, for example, from a store clerk who handled materials used in the bombs or a stray hair that ended up in the bomb.

Monday, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents visited the Rhode Island home of the parents of Katherine Russell, the widow of Tamerlan Tsarnaev. He died after a shootout with police four days after the April 15 bombings.

"The FBI is there as part of our ongoing investigation, but we aren't permitted to discuss specific aspects of the case," said FBI spokesman Jason Pack.

Ms. Russell has been staying with her parents since the bombings, and FBI agents have been seen posted outside the house since her late husband was identified as one of the bombers. Her lawyer has said she is "doing everything she can to assist with the investigation."

One official familiar with the case said agents went to the house Monday to collect a DNA sample from Ms. Russell, the culmination of days of negotiations. FBI officials also have been negotiating with Ms. Russell's attorney in recent days to gain fuller access to question her, the officials familiar with the case said. The officials said the DNA request was needed to determine whether it matched the DNA found on the bomb remnants.

Ms. Russell is one of as many as a half-dozen people in whom investigators are interested as they seek to determine if the brothers had any help in the bomb attack or the days afterward, the officials said. Ms. Russell's lawyer didn't immediately respond to a request for comment about the latest developments.

Investigators have no evidence that any of the associates of the brothers had knowledge of the bombing plot, and they believe that if anyone helped to dispose of evidence—a point that remains uncertain—it may have been unwitting, according to officials briefed on the investigation.

Two Russian government officials said Tamerlan Tsarnaev exchanged notes over the Internet with William Plotnikov, a boxer who moved with his parents from Russia to Canada before joining militants in the North Caucasus. And they said Mr. Tsarnaev met several times in early 2012 with Mansur Makhmud Nidal, an alleged militant from the Russian province of Dagestan and suspected jihadist recruiter. The meetings happened in a mosque in Dagestan's capital of Makhachkala known for its adherence to a puritanical strain of Islam, they said.

The Tsarnaevs' parents have denied their sons were involved in terrorism.

Mr. Nidal died in a firefight in Makhachkala last May after a five-hour standoff that ended with him throwing a grenade at police officials, according to Russian authorities. Mr. Plotnikov died two months later, in mid-July, during a raid in the hinterland of Utamysh, a village southwest of Makhachkala.

Mr. Tsarnaev was in the region at the time of both raids but left Russia for the U.S. three days after the second one. He left before picking up a Russian passport that had been prepared for him at the local migration office in Dagestan's capital.

"He intended to join the fighters, but he lost his contacts," one of the Russian officials said. "In the end he picked an easier enemy in Boston."

The Russian officials said it was unclear whether Mr. Tsarnaev and Mr. Plotnikov ever met in person. The parents of the two boxers say they don't recall any interaction between the two. There are no indications that the two men ever boxed together, and Russian officials haven't yet produced any of the online communication that they say exists.

A U.S. official said Russian authorities haven't shared any information about Mr. Tsarnaev related to contact with any suspected militants during his trip last year to Dagestan. Several U.S. officials, however, said they believe Russia has more information about Mr. Tsarnaev that hasn't been handed over.

Another coverup: There is no way that the skeleton is that of a human. The "DNA" sample they used had to be contaminated with a modern human's DNA. Oh, and what a coincidence. The skeleton was found in the desert where those huge, strange, figures appear. They obviously are landing strips for UFO's.
