KEY POINTS
Apple on Tuesday announced a new multibillion-dollar deal with Broadcom to develop 5G radio frequency components in the U.S.
“We’re thrilled to make commitments that harness the ingenuity, creativity, and innovative spirit of American manufacturing,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a release.
Apple said its deal with Broadcom is part of its 2021 commitment to invest $430 billion in the U.S. economy.

Broadcom $AVGO Upside Target & Short Level Revealed

Shares of chip maker Broadcom (AVGO) are climbing higher again today. They are significantly above their July lows of $198, currently trading at $245.00. Based on technical charting, Broadcom will continue to move higher until it gets to about $265. Once there, a maximum upside level will be tagged and the stock will likely pull back sharply. Investors who are long can remain long until $265. Those looking for shorts be patient until that level.

Tic tac ... US President Donald Trump stepped in to block Broadcom’s $142 billion hostile takeover of Qualcomm over national security concerns, ending a deal which Reuters reported would have been the biggest ever in the technology sector.

Trump issued a an unprecedented presidential order, which was based on a recommendation by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the US (CFIUS).

The order stated: “There is credible evidence that leads me to believe that Broadcom, a limited company organised under the laws of Singapore, along with its partners…through exercising control of Qualcomm, might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States.”

Broadcom issued a short statement saying it is reviewing the order and “strongly disagrees that its proposed acquisition of Qualcomm raises any national security concerns.”

In its own statement, Qualcomm said it had been ordered to reconvene a postponed annual stockholders meeting at the earliest available date: based on a required ten-day notice period, this will occur on 23 March. The company noted all directors nominated by Broadcom are prohibited from standing for election.

Broadcom originally nominated 11 potential members to Qualcomm’s board, but subsequently pared the number back to six.

Security fears
US authorities had raised fears a takeover would hand the initiative in 5G development to China. In early March CFIUS – which is part of the US treasury – ordered a 30-day delay on the Qualcomm shareholder vote, as it as it investigated the proposed deal.

The executive order from the president came despite Broadcom announcing plans to accelerate a move from Singapore to the US to ease concerns a takeover of Qualcomm posed a threat to national security. The Singapore-based chipmaker said it would relocate its official base to the US by end-April at the latest: Reuters reported Broadcom aimed to complete the move by 3 April, two days before Qualcomm was due to hold its postponed shareholder meeting.

Last week Broadcom pledged to make the US a global leader in 5G and set up a $1.5 billion fund to train engineers in future technologies should its attempt to acquire Qualcomm be successful.

Broadcom made its first move on Qualcomm in November 2017 and since amended its offer several times following opposition from Qualcomm’s management: the latest bid stood at $79 per share.

12:28 PM Up initially following its Q1 beat, Texas Instruments (TXN -1.3%) has reversed course, possibly due to worries about a massive drop in wireless chip sales. During its earnings call, TI noted sales of "connectivity" products such as Wi-Fi chips were soft, to go with an expected plunge in baseband chip sales (a business TI is exiting). Is that a sign TI is losing share to Wi-Fi chip leader Broadcom (BRCM -1%), or (along with ARM's shipment data) one of soft industry sales?

The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) recently announced that worldwide semiconductor sales showed a 1.3 percent decline in February, yet sales in the Americas region showed a 1.1 percent gain over the previous month.
"It's encouraging to see that the U.S. posted the third consecutive month of job gains which points to momentum in the U.S. economic recovery. However, the global picture bears close watching given the continued sluggish economies in Europe and in Asia," said Brian Toohey, president, Semiconductor Industry Association. "Overall, the combination of improved U.S. macroeconomic factors along with sequential semiconductor sales growth in the Americas region warrants an optimistic view for growth in 2012."

The results for the second quarter of fiscal 2012 compared to a net loss of $187 million, or $0.19 per diluted share, on net sales of $2.1 billion for the first quarter of fiscal 2012, and net income of $72 million, or $0.07 per diluted share, on net sales of $2.3 billion for the second quarter of fiscal 2011.

Optimized for top-of-rack switches, 10GbE server adapters and LOMs (LAN on motherboard) in the data center, the highly integrated quad-port BCM84844 and dual-port BCM84846 lower operating power by more than 50 percent(1). The new PHYs substantially reduce power consumption at 10GE to less than two watts per port through the use of EEE, and extend the benefits of EEE to include all device speeds including 1GbE. As a result of increasing network traffic and higher bandwidth servers such as Romley, industry analysts predict a 20x increase in 10GBASE-T adoption by 2013, as data centers upgrade to higher densities(2). Broadcom's second generation 40 nanometer (nm) PHYs drive innovation in 10GbE, offering robust operation over 100 meter cables while significantly reducing footprint, cost and power consumption.
Power is critical as network managers seek to reduce cost and carbon footprint of large scale data centers. Broadcom's AutoGrEEEn™ technology enables systems with legacy MACs to get the power savings of EEE in periods of reduced link utilization. A Broadcom (BRCM) Bluetooth/Wi-Fi combo chip is also found inside the 900, which has an unsubsidized price of $450 and an estimated bill of materials of $209.
