I was wondering what people think about the various online brokers. Specifically, I wanted to know which one people think provides the best trading platform, bang for the buck, and features for the small time <$2000 investor just getting started.
Thanks in advance :)
sounds like you did a complete 180 degrees there, lol. from wanting to be in criminal justice to being the criminal.
Please help!
I have come to realize that I may have screwed up in choosing my major in college. I am entering my second semester of my junior year as a criminal justice major. I have grown such an interest in stocks, economy, etc, that I have lost interest in going to bars, clubs, and parties. My best friends DJ in atlantic city and I tell them I can't go just to do some DD.
My concern is that I am too deep into my criminal justice program and I can't turn around and perhaps switch. Would it be better to minor in some sort of business, finance, economics? I would love to work in the business sector as a financial advisor or stock broker. I am looking for an internship after I graduate in the business field rather than my initial plans of becoming a state trooper.
Any recommendations? Do you HAVE to major in the field of business to pick up an internship at lets say a private/public brokerage.
thanks in advance

Does anyone know if Margin accounts are able to trade today? I did one day trade today and now I am trying to buy another stock and it's not allowing me to. I was wondering if the banks had something to do with this.

Yes clears it up for me! Thank you very much.
O/S means Outstanding Shares
(Total shares sold to date)
A/S means Authorized Shares
(Total shares authorized for sale)
15 x .. means that the company had issued (and outstanding) 20 million O/S shares a year ago, and had grown that to 15 times that, or 300 million O/S shares within one year.
Does that help?
Terminology question!
Sorry I am really new and I someone had posted :
"almost 300mm O/S "
and
"It's the 15 x's increase in OS in less than a year that is ugly, not the 300mil per se. "
also used
"A/S"
I know enough to be dangerous being an accounting student just not the abbreviations used here! Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Tax Question for Professional Trader
I am transitioning to being a professional swing trader full time and I want to be able to be file as one when I do my taxes next year for business purposes. I am trading out of my IRA right now and don't plan on creating a LLC yet. Can I still file as a professional trader and take tax deductions for my new career even if I'm trading out of my IRA account? Thanks!
Sorry for the delay in replying to you.
Thanks for the info. I appreciate your time.

That's great.
If your relative wants to get those certs into street name, my #1 recommendation is that they visit their local Bank of America branch and open a securities account and deposit the certificates.
Why B of A? Well, they offer a commission free trading account -- for like the first 25 or 30 trades a month. That's a useful thing.
There are other broker/dealers, of course, but that bank is everywhere, and it's super easy. If your relative already banks with them (many people do), it makes it even easier.
If your relative is elderly, or unsure about trading stocks (I can relate to this, so I am guessing this might be true in this case), you can also arrange for a proxy so that you have permission to trade in their account for them. That's the best way to have authority to trade, but no ownership of the account. The bank or broker will have forms for that, ask for one when you open the account.
If you have certificates, and they are not in your name, but your relative wants to grant them to you, you will have to have your relative provide a signature in the presence of a special notary (aka a "medallion signature" -- a service provided by almost every local branch bank in the USA). So go with them to a local bank to take care of that.

Other people will have their own ideas, but these are my suggestions.
Good luck.
Correct. I have done nothing with the Southern Realty stock. It still sits, and we still get dividend checks once a year. (How about that? A otc stock that actually HAS income and pays dividends! What a novel concept!)
SRLY - you mean Southern Realty?
http://www.otcmarkets.com/stock/SRLY/company-info
What did you do?
My (now deceased) father bought a VERY thinly traded stock, SRLY, many decades ago. This was long before electronic trading days, so we have an actual stock certificate. I was able to download all of the transactions for this stock: from 9/15/2002 to present, there have been 98 days of trading activity. So although it is still traded, the volume is so thin as to make it virtually unsalable. How do I go about selling off this stock? Do I have to enlist the help of a broker? I use eTrade, and I know I can call and get the help of a broker, but I'm not crazy about paying a large fee just to talk to someone there.
Any thoughts would certainly be appreciated.
Thanks
Jim
Threshold security? I'm just starting out and I am having trouble understanding what threshold securities are.
This is all that I read.
stocks for which sellers failed to deliver 10,000 shares or more in the past five trading days and the level of “fails” is a minimum of 0.5 percent of the shares outstanding.
Could anyone try and explain what that means? Thanks
outstanding shares need help understanding what it means. The stocks I own has a A/S of 4 billion & the O/S is 4 billion (dont know what the float is). Does that mean all the shares of the company is owned by investors & restricted shares? So any shares being traded now is only what investors are willing to sell?
TIA
Interactive Brokers. Only $1/trade, but there is a $10/month fee.
Their trading system takes a bit of getting used to though. Other than them, Ameritrade has been halfway decent....I guess it all depends on how much you trade.

Are you trading .0001 stocks? Is this the kind of stock you are wondering about?
I would like to know this as well. Anyone?
I don't know of a chart, but here is where you went wrong with your math...
$200.00 divided by .00015 will by you 13,333,333.33 shares. You just had your decimal point misplaced was all.
what online sites would you guys recommend that are fairly cheap to trade penny stocks on? ...even when spending only a few hundred dollars?!
I'M a newbie and a little on the dumb side. When i want to make a trade and the stock is selling at .00015 and divide it into $200.00 I get a number 13333.33. Which is not right. i'm to old to go back to school. Is there a chart with a number breakdown like you have with interest rates? THXs John
And where's the chart on this stock?.........et z
ROFLMAO! Good one!
My heart has been pumping away largely trouble free for longer than most. Maybe it is because I do not blame it for me foibles, like fallin in love maybe a hunnert times in me life.
And not accusin it of having cockles.
Actually, the heart pumps the blood. It is not an emotional center, but the emotions does affect it as it does most of the rest of the body.
Actually, the genitals are more affected. But who will say it warms the cockles of me cock?? Not socially acceptable, that, not usually in polite society anyway.
I fear it is the brain to blame, if we must blame some part of us for getting stirred .
IF her husband still wants her after all that she must be hot....post the pic
Here is one possible answer...
http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-coc2.htm
[Q] From Craig Bodhi: “I’m curious about the idiom warm the cockles of your heart.”
[A] It’s one of the more lovely idioms in the language, isn’t it? Something that warms the cockles of one’s heart induces a glow of pleasure, sympathy, affection, or some such similar emotion. What gets warmed is the innermost part of one’s being. It’s not that surprising that it should be associated with the heart, that being the presumed seat of the emotions for most people. But what are the cockles?
We’re not sure. We do know that the expression turns up first in the middle of the seventeenth century, and that the earliest form of the idiom was rejoice the cockles of one’s heart.
Cockles are a type of bivalve mollusc, once a staple part of the diet for many British people (you may recall that Sweet Molly Malone once wheeled her wheelbarrow through Dublin’s fair city, crying “cockles and mussels, alive, alive oh!”). They are frequently heart-shaped (their formal zoological genus was at one time Cardium, of the heart), with ribbed shells.
It may be that the shape and spiral ribbing of the ventricles of the heart reminded surgeons of the two valves of the cockle. But I can’t find an example of the word cockle being applied to the heart outside this expression, which makes me suspicious of this explanation. It may be that the shape of the cockleshell, suggesting the heart as it so obviously does, gave rise to cockles of the heart as an expansion.
After this piece appeared in the Newsletter, James Woodfield pointed out that there is another possible explanation. In medieval Latin, the ventricles of the heart were at times called cochleae cordis, where the second word is an inflected form of cor, heart. Those unversed in Latin could have misinterpreted cochleae as cockles, or it might have started out as a university in-joke. Oddly, cochlea in Latin is the word for a snail (from the shape of the ventricles — it’s also the name given to the spiral cavity of the inner ear), so if this story is right we should really be speaking of warming the snails of one’s heart.

Gratify one, make one feel good, as in It warms the cockles of my heart to see them getting along so well. This expression uses a corruption of the Latin name for the heart's ventricles, cochleae cordis. [Second half of 1600s]

Isn't it the Ferengi who keep their cockles near their knees? - in which case scrubbing the floor must warm their cockles no end!
Maybe that's why their spaceships are so dirty?!
What do they mean when people say:
"Warms the cockles of my heart."
Is this a cockle?
Do you have any in your heart? I checked mine but I didn't have any.

What kind of question was that? Wasn't it an Answer?
That's an easy one. The atmosphere passes through all the colors of the sun EXCEPT blue.
why is the sky blue?
(02-26) 10:35 PST DALY CITY -- A Daly City man was rescued by helicopter from a wooded hillside on San Bruno Mountain after he became trapped while trying to retrieve his model airplane, authorities said Tuesday.
The 44-year-old man, who was not identified, called 911 on his cell phone about 6:45 p.m. Monday, saying it was dark and he couldn't make his way down the hill. Daly City firefighters summoned a Coast Guard helicopter, which arrived a half hour later.
"It was very thick brush and very steep," said Fire Department inspector Angelina Ciucci. "It would have taken a long time to get hand crews in there to rescue him."
The helicopter hovered while a Coast Guardsman was lowered on a rescue harness and the man was lifted to safety. There were no injuries.
The model airplane was not retrieved.

(02-26) 18:33 PST REDWOOD CITY -- A San Mateo woman who lied about being sexually assaulted at gunpoint by a group of men after her car supposedly broke down in Foster City was sentenced Tuesday to 90 days in jail for filing a false police report.
Karyn Galila, 24, sobbed in a Redwood City courtroom as Commissioner Kathleen McKenna ordered her taken into custody immediately. Galila was handcuffed as her husband looked on. He tried to hug her before she was led away but was ordered by a bailiff not to touch her.
Galila apparently made up the assault story to explain to her husband why she had come home late after rendezvousing at a restaurant with a man she had recently met online, according to her probation report.
