Russia aims to be nanotech leader

(AP:MOSCOW) President Dmitry Medvedev says Russia is thinking big when it comes to nanotechnology.

Medvedev told an international nanotechnology forum that Russia aims to be a world leader in an industry he said has vast potential. He stressed that Russia needs to stop coasting on its income from energy exports and diversify its economy.

Nanotechnology allows scientists to manipulate materials at the molecular level, and nanomaterials have come increasingly into use.

Medvedev cited estimates that nanotechnology could be a $2 billion (euro1.37 billion) to $3 billion industry by 2015.

The Kremlin has set up a state corporation to oversee nanotechnology.

(NaturalNews) A New York jury has concluded that pharmaceutical company Lederle Laboratories was responsible for the injury to a man who contracted polio from a vaccine 30 years ago, and ordered it to pay him $22.5 million.

Dominick Tenuto became infected with polio in 1979, shortly after his daughter received a vaccine made by Lederle from a live polio virus. Tenuto alleged that he had been exposed to the live virus while changing his daughter's diaper.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a total of 144 people in the United States became infected with polio from live vaccines between 1980 and 1998. While the majority of these were the vaccine recipients themselves, the number includes 51 who contracted the disease upon contact with a vaccinated individual.

Tenuto became paralyzed from the disease and ended up spending months in intensive care, breathing through a hospital ventilator. Even after two years of rehabilitative therapy, he remained partially paralyzed and to this day cannot get around without a wheelchair. Because the Wall Street office where he worked was not wheelchair accessible, Tenuto lost his job. In 1981, he filed a lawsuit against Lederle.

Shortly before the verdict came down, Lederle offered Tenuto a $10 million settlement agreement, which he rejected upon the advice of his lawyers.

"You need the money," lead counsel Benedict Morelli told him, "but before that, you need vindication."

After one day of deliberation, the jury ruled that Lederle had not only made a vaccine that was unreasonably dangerous, but that it had also failed to sufficiently warn doctors about the vaccine's risk. It ordered the company to pay Tenuto $5 million for medical and rehabilitation expenses and lost earnings, and $17.5 million for past and future pain and suffering.

Lawyer Martin Edelman, who has been working on the case for his entire legal career, said that he was "relieved" at the verdict. Tenuto's lawyers had advanced him $500,000 worth of work over the course of the case.

Following is some of the thought process behind how The Nanotechnology.com Small Technology Index was calculated on start date March 15, 2006 and the "why" and how it is up-dated, minute to minute on our site.

We considered both "market capitalization weighted" and "equal dollar weighted" index methodologies (the 2 most common) and decided that both jeopardized the integrity of an index based on such a limited universe (75-100 total international companies) with so many micro and mini-caps ($25 to $250 million) and a sprinkling of mid-caps ($5-20 billion) whose performance would dwarf them.

So, like the U.S. Congress, made up of both a Senate and House of Representatives, we tried to create some balance, with larger cap stocks playing a more significant role, but not as much as their size alone would dictate. Again, we asked the question: "what would a professional investor do with $30 million, told he or she had to invest at least 1 ½ % in each of these particular 30 stocks?"

Here's how the Index was calculated on March 15, 2006 and continues to be calculated. On the first day we established a constant divisor called "K" like this:

After adding these, we divided it by the number "K" that made the Index equal to 1000. Then that # "K" is the key number in calculating the Index and remains the constant until and unless the makeup of the Index membership changes due to the addition or subtraction of member, stock dividend or split.

*On July 8, 2006 Applied Films Corp. (AFCO) was taken over by Applied Materials Inc. (AMAT). As of that date 34 shares of AFCO were removed from the Nanotechnology.com Small Technology Index and replaced with 161 shares of Luna Innovations Incorporated (LUNA).

*On December 2, 2006 Freescale Semiconductor (FSL) was taken over by a private equity group in the largest high-tech takeover in history (some $17 billion). As of that date 52 shares of FSL were removed and replaced with 100 shares of Lumera (LMRA), 20 additional shares of XLNX, 13 additional shares of FORM and 40 additional shares of CHRT.

*On September 19, 2007 Cambridge Display Technology (OLED) was taken over by Sumitomo Chemical Company at approximately $12/share. As of that date 65 shares of OLED were removed and replaced with 49 shares of Universal Display (PANL).

*On November 14, 2007 Abraxis BioScience, (ABBI) split itself into two separate companies, a new Abraxis BioScience (ABII) – fully-focused on developing the company’s nanoparticle cancer therapeutics including their Abraxane, and APP Pharmaceuticals (APPX) – developing the company’s hospital product business. For every share of ABBI shareholders were given 1 share of APPX and ¼ share of ABII. We had 37 shares of ABBI accounted for in our Index. Because of our focus, we took the approximate valuation of the combined companies on opening and divided by the price of ABII. 37 shares of ABBI became 18 shares of ABII for our index since we have no interest in the now-separate hospital product business, and this transaction could have actually been accomplished in the market.

2009 Nanotech & Advanced Technology Investment Insights

Dear Nanotech Insights Subscriber,

I have been looking for a way to be of service to our most loyal readers. Especially in this extremely difficult economy, we need trusted, experienced and knowledgeable advisors.
We are developing a way that I may be able to provide a unique service for a few of you: More on that later.

Let’s take a look back at 2008 and a look forward at 2009/2010 and see what we got right and what we missed, and how we should proceed in the coming years.


What we missed:

In March 2008, I suggested for the first time since 2002 that investors start investing 1/24 of their funds for advanced tech stocks on a dollar-cost-average basis, every month for the next 24 months. I fear I was a year or more early.
In May 2008, I proposed that the stock market and small-tech bottom would be in place before the end of 2009. While I now believe such a bottom may technically be put in place this year, I don’t see a significant advance beginning before 2011 at the earliest now.

I apologize if this cost you money. While negative on the economy, I now believe even I was too early on the markets and March-May 2008 was part of a different world that no longer exists. There were no bailouts. There were no multi-trillion dollar stimulus programs (yes, by the end of 2010 it will not be $775B it will be more like $2.5T). I just thought things were horrible and getting worse; I didn’t know the roof was about to cave in. This was a time when TARP was merely a flexible, waterproof covering.


What we got right:

We warned to sell all small-tech & advanced tech stocks in October 2006, and that turned out to be good advice, as the typical stock in this group was down more than 25% to May 2008.
We have been warning continuously since 2003 that the venture capital model is broken, and finally this month Forbes, in a major expose, noted that the top firms in VC (to say nothing of the average) have not returned profits to their limited partners in eight years while collecting ridiculous fees.
Despite the warnings, we managed to guide our subscribers to significant profits in trading nanotech and small-tech stocks from early 2006 through 2008, far exceeding the notable indices, which posted negative returns.
We warned of a recession and collapse in real estate in 2006 and in November 2007 warned that this would be the consensus view before September 2008.


Where we are today:

It pains me say this, but while we have spoken about passing the early 1980’s double recession and the 1973/74 recession a while back, we have now made enough of a mess to say we have passed the Panic of 1907 and are fast approaching the Panic of 1893. While I am not a scholar in the field, the Panic of 1893 is considered this country’s most damaging depression with the exception of the Great Depression. This depression is starting to look in many ways like and echo the 1893 -1898 depression. It is unlikely that we will find a “bottom” for the economy before mid 2010 and if we keep putting the day of reckoning into the future like Japan did in 1990 (to today, continuing), we may see 11-16% unemployment and a bottom in 2013 or later.

My biggest question mark is how long this deflationary period will last. My work cannot see whether it ends in 3 months or lingers for 3 years. Certainly, whenever it ends years of high inflation (hopefully not hyperinflation) will follow. The human costs, market costs and financing predicaments will be immense. Please don’t listen to those who think this is all going to pass by June to October of 2009. The next layoff response is still months away (and it may not be the last) and the best day for a laid-off person is the actual day they are laid-off. Months later, when jobs are still hard to find and money is scarcer, it is much worse.

We expect the markets to do better than the economy. There will be some significant rallies, and while we do not expect the November 2008 low in the stock market will hold, it might.

'The photon force is with us': Harnessing light to drive nanomachines

Their work opens the door to a new class of semiconductor devices that are operated by the force of light. They envision a future where this process powers quantum information processing and sensing devices, as well as telecommunications that run at ultra-high speed and consume little power.

The research, appearing in the November 27 issue of Nature, demonstrates a marriage of two emerging fields of research — nanophotonics and nanomechanics. – which makes possible the extreme miniaturization of optics and mechanics on a silicon chip.

The energy of light has been harnessed and used in many ways. The "force" of light is different — it is a push or a pull action that causes something to move.

"While the force of light is far too weak for us to feel in everyday life, we have found that it can be harnessed and used at the nanoscale," said team leader Hong Tang, assistant professor at Yale. "Our work demonstrates the advantage of using nano-objects as "targets" for the force of light — using devices that are a billion-billion times smaller than a space sail, and that match the size of today's typical transistors."

Until now light has only been used to maneuver single tiny objects with a focused laser beam — a technique called "optical tweezers." Postdoctoral scientist and lead author, Mo Li noted, "Instead of moving particles with light, now we integrate everything on a chip and move a semiconductor device."

"When researchers talk about optical forces, they are generally referring to the radiation pressure light applies in the direction of the flow of light," said Tang. "The new force we have investigated actually kicks out to the side of that light flow."

While this new optical force was predicted by several theories, the proof required state-of-the-art nanophotonics to confine light with ultra-high intensity within nanoscale photonic wires. The researchers showed that when the concentrated light was guided through a nanoscale mechanical device, significant light force could be generated — enough, in fact, to operate nanoscale machinery on a silicon chip.

The light force was routed in much the same way electronic wires are laid out on today's large scale integrated circuits. Because light intensity is much higher when it is guided at the nanoscale, they were able to exploit the force. "We calculate that the illumination we harness is a million times stronger than direct sunlight," adds Wolfram Pernice, a Humboldt postdoctoral fellow with Tang.

"We create hundreds of devices on a single chip, and all of them work," says Tang, who attributes this success to a great optical I/O device design provided by their collaborators at the University of Washington.

It took more than 60 years to progress from the first transistors to the speed and power of today's computers. Creating devices that run solely on light rather than electronics will now begin a similar process of development, according to the authors.

"While this development has brought us a new device concept and a giant step forward in speed, the next developments will be in improving the mechanical aspects of the system. But," says Tang, "the photon force is with us."

Just Scratching the Surface: New Technique Maps Nanomaterials as They Grow

(PhysOrg.com) -- Researchers at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have developed a measurement technique that will help scientists and companies map nanomaterials as they grow.

The discovery could help create superior nanotechnologies and lead to the development of more efficient solar panels and increased magnetic data storage.

“Since we discovered this technique, we have been trying to get the word out to the nanoscience and nanotechnology research community,” said professor and head of physics, applied physics, and astronomy Gwo-Ching Wang, who helped discover the technique. “It is inexpensive because it uses existing technology and vastly increases the rate of discovery by giving researchers a very clear picture of how to perfect and duplicate the growth of a new nanomaterial without spending months characterizing its structures after the growth.”

The approach is based on a commonly used technique known as reflection high-energy electron diffraction, or RHEED. The traditional RHEED system creates an interference pattern of the surface of the nanomaterial. The pattern contains only partial information of the surface and is only a snapshot in time of the growing surface. The researchers modified the traditional RHEED technique by rotating the substrate on which the nanomaterial is being grown. This gives them a diagram containing the complete information on the crystal orientation distribution of the growing surface.

The new technique is different from other common techniques such as X-rays because it monitors the surface structure of the material as it grows. X-ray and other technologies measure the entire material, from the tip of the new growth straight through the substrate that the material is growing on. The new RHEED technique shows the growth of only a few nanometers of a material at a time.

“The creation of a surface crystal orientation diagram is particularly important for revealing the nature of the growth of nanostructures such as nanodots, nanorods, and nanoblades, which have strong energy and data storage capabilities, but their orientation can change dramatically over time,” Wang said. These changes in crystal orientation and morphology of the material can substantially increase or decrease the material’s efficiency. It also makes their use in consumer products difficult because of their unpredictability, according to Wang.

Wang views solar energy materials as one of the most important applications for the new technique. The most efficient solar panels on the market are comprised of single crystal materials, meaning that the material is one unbroken material with no grain boundaries. Grain boundaries in a nanomaterial cause huge decreases in energy-conversion capabilities. But, single crystal solar cells are so costly that they could never be widely used on the consumer market, Wang said. So, many scientists and solar cell companies are working to create polycrystalline materials that grow in such a way that they transfer light into electricity similar to a single crystal material despite having grain boundaries. These materials are also much less expensive, according to Wang.

“The problem with creating high-quality polycrystalline materials is that you need a powerful technique to monitor them in nanocscale dimensions as they grow so you can quickly work on recreating the material to maximize its efficiency,” Wang said. “The new RHEED technique really allows researchers to create a material, see how it formed, and then turn around and recreate the most ideal version of that material without extensive experimentations.”

Wang was joined in her research by Toh-Ming Lu, professor of physics, applied physics, and astronomy, and postdoctoral research associate Fu Tang. Together they have presented their findings within the Proceedings of SPIE and the Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics as well as at conferences around the world including the American Vacuum Society 55th International Symposium and Exhibition on Oct. 23 and before representatives from the Department of Energy on Oct. 31.

“Everywhere we go to present these findings, people have become more and more excited about the possibilities that it opens up for them in their own research,” she said.

Has nanotech darling's time arrived?

Progress in buckypaper may alter modern manufacturing

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — It's called "buckypaper" and looks a lot like ordinary carbon paper, but don't be fooled by the cute name or flimsy appearance.

It could revolutionize the way everything from airplanes to TVs are made.

Buckypaper is 10 times lighter but potentially 500 times stronger than steel when sheets of it are stacked and pressed together to form a composite. Unlike conventional composite materials, though, it conducts electricity like copper or silicon and disperses heat like steel or brass.

"All those things are what a lot of people in nanotechnology have been working toward as sort of Holy Grails," said Wade Adams, a scientist at Rice University.


That idea — that there is great future promise for buckypaper and other derivatives of the ultra-tiny cylinders known as carbon nanotubes — has been floated for years now. However, researchers at Florida State University say they have made important progress that may soon turn hype into reality.

Buckypaper is made from tube-shaped carbon molecules 50,000 times thinner than a human hair. Due to its unique properties, it is envisioned as a wondrous new material for light, energy-efficient aircraft and automobiles, more powerful computers, improved TV screens and many other products.

"If this thing goes into production, this very well could be a very, very game-changing or revolutionary technology to the aerospace business," said Les Kramer, chief technologist for Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, which is helping fund the Florida State research.
The scientific discovery that led to buckypaper virtually came from outer space.

In 1985, British scientist Harry Kroto joined researchers at Rice for an experiment to create the same conditions that exist in a star. They wanted to find out how stars, the source of all carbon in the universe, make this element that is a main building block of life.

Everything went as planned with one exception.

"There was an extra character that turned up totally unexpected," recalled Kroto, now at Florida State.

The surprise guest was a molecule with 60 carbon atoms shaped like a soccer ball. To Kroto, it also looked like the geodesic domes promoted by Buckminster Fuller, an architect, inventor and futurist. That inspired Kroto to name the new molecule buckminsterfullerene, or "buckyballs" for short.

For their discovery of the buckyball — the third form of pure carbon to be discovered after graphite and diamonds — Kroto and his Rice colleagues, Robert Curl Jr. and Richard Smalley, were awarded the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1996.

Separately, Japanese physicist Sumio Iijima developed a tube-shaped variation while doing research at Arizona State University.

The secret of its strength is the huge surface area of each nanotube, said Ben Wang, director of Florida State's High-Performance Materials Institute.

So far, the Florida State institute has been able to produce buckypaper with half the strength of the best existing composite material, known as IM7. Wang expects to close the gap quickly.

The long-range goal is to build planes, automobiles and other things with buckypaper composites.
