I agree with all of that other than whether Obama is qualified to be president. I guess I put more weight on raw brainpower,relevant education and temperament where others prefer experience, or "executive experience" in palin's case, but that's what elections are all about.

Now, as you said, that's all in the past and we have what we have. We'll be much better served if we focus on what we CAN do now rather than what has been done.

I know one thing for sure...

If two people as intelligent as I believe you and I are, and who started from such close positions can't find a path to honest reconciliation and open dialogue, then the country as a whole doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of doing it.

Fortunately, I think Obama's 75% Favorable rating bodes well for us all. It shows that America is hopeful and willing to give him a chance and try to keep an open mind.

Let's be part of the constructive dialogue and put all that nastiness behind us.

i was not even a republican and have never voted for a republican president.

i am not interested in re-fighting the battles that were decided on november 4th.

whether or not she was qualified for the position is a bit irrelevant now, eh? we now have a president who wasn't, either, but he is in a position to show that he can do it.

so wishing him well is a better idea than going back and bayonetting the wounded from the last battle.

Bush is a fuckstick, and overcoming his and cheney's actions is probably a task that no one might be able to correct in a term or two. There were any number of candidates for VP better than palin, but they did not accept the suicide mission of following the bush circus; she was not the first one asked, i have heard that jindal for instance wasn't interested. Trashing her is and was a bit disingenious. It became sexist sport.

Energy is better spent on rebuilding the country than trashing the past fuck-ups.

I never could figure out why you took up the defense of Palin so stridently and I still don't understand it to tell you the truth.

Whether she was unfairly portrayed by the "liberal media" or not is still up for debate in my opinion. I think you have to admit that her few initial interviews were complete failures on her part and her calling the questions asked "gotcha questions" was a lame defense for a pitiful showing of herself.

By the way, it was Carl Cameron of Fox Noise that broke that story about country vs continent, and as far as I know they haven't apologized AT ALL for it.

I also still believe wholeheartedly that she is woefully unqualified to be VP and that McCain's choosing her was a blatant political move to win an election at the expense of possibly putting America in serious danger in the event of his death or incapacitation. That was and is unforgiveable in my opinion and proves that he caved in to the right wing instead of being true to his previous, and admirable, "maverick" and free thinking morals and pragmatism.

And I admit that my emotions were running extremely high at the time of our falling out, but then as now, I find it impossible not to feel disgust and even hatred for those republicans who have nothing but their own retention of power at heart and couldn't care less about America or her people.

And many of them continue in the exact same vein, which I hope and believe will finally relegate them and their party to second rate status for generations to come.

But for those who have a genuine desire to move forward and give Obama a chance before advocating and planning his destruction I offer reconciliation with my own apologies for lumping them in with the worst of the opposition that insists on continuing their politics of hate, greed, and selfishness for power at the expense of all of us.

the only hatred i had was for the all-out attack on palin that was uncalled for. if she was truly as horrible as the haters of her professed (for example, she never once said that africa was a country, but got crucified for it in the liberal press, who never retracted, except for MSNBC in an indirect way) then no one would have been interested in her.

obama has a tough set of things to deal with, and he needs a chance to do it.

having called me a piece of shit over political things means you still need the "calming down" more than i do. not apologizing for your uncivil behavior, yet feeling comfortable in trying to lecture me means that you are a sore winner and still need a dose of pragmatism.

I think you are a better person than that, but you lost your cool and since you held the board cards, you had the ability to kick someone when they couldn't kick back, which is not something i feel was acceptable character behavior.

Obama is making some good moves, but if you are taking personal credit for his actions you need to check your ego.

I'm glad to see you're calming down. I was about to give up on you for good, thinking that all that hatred had gotten the better of you.

Obama has the highest post-election/pre-inauguration Favorable numbers of any president since they started tracking that number. I think he's going to do everything he can to fulfill the promises he made and to change the tenor of American politics.

You gotta' love his reaching out to Hillary and McCain. No Republican would have done anything like that. I think he's gonna' be a great president, and the republicans are going to look sicker and meaner as they continue to attempt to block him. I'm hoping they've sealed their fate for many years to come.

And in the spirit of reconciliation that Obama is making a focus of his presidency, I'd like to follow that model and see if you and I can't do the same.

I think now that the emotion is fading everybody will have a better chance of returning to sanity and pragmatic dialogue instead of screaming at each other at the top of their lungs.

Her history of having voted for bush apparently qualifies her for a position of Republican strategist, as most of her posts are about what the Republican party should do.

Even those of us that do not like obama are supportive of him and wish the best for the country since obama is the only president we have for awhile, but instead of welcoming people into the fold, people like her keep on the attack since that aspect of the race is all that excited them about the campaign anyway. My mood is a little better I guess. Must be my audacious nature once again seeing a little hope for us to come out of this mess better and stronger for the struggle, and beginning to believe that change is once again actually possible after all these years. :D

The $250k mark is for individuals, not couples.

And there's a HUGE misconception/illusion that the pubs have perpetrated on America as far as the US having the 2nd highest corporate tax rate in the industrial world.

It is high, for those who actually pay the taxes. Unfortunately, better than half of them have found ways to off-shore their money and don't actually pay much if any taxes.

I don't know the exact figures, and I don't know if anybody does, but I'm sure that if all U.S. corporations had to pay a fair tax that the overall corporate tax rate could be cut by 1/2 and we'd still have more revenues coming in.

They would definitely whine about it and try to foist it off on the little guy, but REAL COMPETITION would actually kick back in and they'd be limited to what they could charge or they'd price themselves right out of the market altogether.

Besides...they never pass the savings on to the little guy when their profit margins rocket because of not having to pay taxes, so we're not seeing any benefit from it anyway. That's another part of the illusion of all this.

It's strange and ironic that the corporations are actually voting against THEIR OWN LONGTERM self-interests by not paying taxes to support the economy. They use the infrastructure more than anybody with their trucks and planes, and they take money out of the pockets of the very consumers that buy their products on top of that. It's the same old "short term self interest" aka personal greed, that is keeping us from propering as a whole nation, together.

A little short term pain for them will do them and us a lot of good in the long run. They just can't see the forest for the trees as their vision is tainted by short term greed.

Now what's this "estranged wife" stuff all about? She's just away temporarily on some job thing right? Or is something else going on?

taxing folks that make over $250,000 sounds good to me. someone has to pay for all the mess, and there is no blood left in the turnip at the bottom of the income scales. i hope that it is INDIVIDUAL income of $250,000, as my estranged wife and i together are dangerously close to that in combined, and i am not going to vote against my own pocketbook. I think the answer to all this lies not only in cutting spending but that in conjunction with raising revenue is imo the COMPLETE answer.

The pubs want only to cut spending on the social programs and still seem to believe that the 'trickle down' form of voodoo economics is the answer.

Anyway, the "raising revenues" part of the equation is what Obama can offer. And there are a few ways to do that.

Actually creating real jobs, and closing loopholes that only the rich can take advantage of are the two biggies that come to mind right off.

The trickle down theory has proven itself to be an illusion. It's had plenty of time to prove itself and it's a complete failure as we can all attest to now.

It worries me that even exceptional people like you have become so despondent and cynical about the whole process that you're ready to just throw up your hands, give up and walk away from the process. That's exactly what the neo-cons would like to see you do. Why? Because they ALWAYS VOTE, and if we don't they win by default. We have to keep trying even if it seems hopeless sometimes.

i think there is only a tiny glimmer of difference between both candidates when you scrape away the rhetoric and blind promises. their war positions have essentially merged, and they can't even figure out what to argue about in terms of the market collapse.

obama has about a trillion dollars worth of initiatives he wants to fund, something for everyone, with no clear way to pay for it. especially with a concurrent tax cut. he now has backed off letting the bush tax break for the rich lapse, due to "fears of recession".

mccain wants to stop earmarks.. well, far out. 1% of the problem solved, the rest remains the same.

The tax on corporations that obama supports is not a good idea, IMHO, as it is regressive. Any increases in corporate taxes get passed on to the consumer, and the poorer people then pay a higher percentage of it than the wealthy, as a 50 cent tax on milk, for example, hits a poor person more, proportionately than a rich person in terms of percentage of income. So cutting taxes to the lower 95% and then saddling them with secondary hidden taxes from corporate tax bleed-downs is just smoke and mirrors.

but mccain doesn't have a plan that is any better.

the whole key is curbing spending, and i am not so sure obama will even do any better at that than bush did, including the war costs.

oh, and incidently, the vitriol on the gov board this morning is not the normal operating mode, i just finally had to flame back at a guy that had been bullying the board for a few days. which of course is stressful, and as you pointed out, not good for one's health.

I consider you a good friend too...and in the spirit of not messing up the other board with politics I came over here to say a couple of things....

first, I see you're not likely voting for McCain and definitely not voting for Obama so I got curious to find out just who you ARE voting for if anybody. Barr? Nader? ???

And the only other point I wanted to make is...I've been watching and listening to this most important election in our lifetimes VERY CLOSELY AND CAREFULLY. Much more than most I'm absolutely sure.

I support Obama without reservation, but that's not based on some blind loyalty to the Dem party or a blind hatred of all things Republican, McCain or Palin either.

I support him because what he is saying makes sense to me. Because I believe he means what he says. Because I think he can make these things happen and will make them happen. Because he's really, honestly on the side of the people and not big business. And because we need somebody like him NOW.

I hope eventually you come to see what I'm seeing in him. I didn't come by my position lightly or automatically.

Anyway...I'm glad you're sounding like you're going to take a break from the political boards. Doesn't seem like anything is getting accomplished over there. People are just screaming at each other and not hearing what the other is saying so it's really a pointless exercise that will only get you a headache or god-forbid, another heart attack.

1/22/07 okay, i have one. Not a story, per se, but a character that is just too interesting to not let ihub know about.
Hence, a variation on the Desert Chronicles.

There is this woman named Sandra in my little cowboy town. She was born and raised here. She is an incredible businesswoman; she owns and runs the grocery store in town, the deli, and has a sheep and hay ranch, and several real estate holdings, but, in addition to being color blind, has the absolute inability to pick men that are suited to her.

She has been married 7 times, however, the mathematics are imprecise because she married one of the guys three times; i am not sure of the actual status now, but i think single again; the last ex moved to Oklahoma to raise parakeets (i am not making this up). With her, decisiveness and Smirnoff's Vodka tend to not go hand in hand, unless one is making a killing on a real estate deal, in which case she has never made a bad move. But figuring out which guy to go home with is a tough go for her.

She once married a rancher across the line over in Nevada, but cooking, etc. are not her forte', and the Schwann's man didn't come within 40 miles of the ranch, so housewifing just didn't take, and she moved back to town and her business pursuits.

She has an absolute heart of gold, and has a mexican hired hand to do the thinking for her on the ranching end; between the two of them they manage to somehow not lose too much money ranching, even if they have no lambs this year because they put a ram in with the ewes that only had one nut and turned out to be sterile.

Being a local in a place where there are hot springs around every corner, she has no appreciation for the abundant geothermal resources of the area. She irrigates her alfalfa with water that comes out of her well, 1000 gallons per minute, at a temperature of 108 degrees. And less than a couple hundred yards away, she has a hot tub on her back porch that is heated electrically. And she uses No. 2 oil to run a water-heated system for the house; she could hook onto her irrigation pump and heat at about 5% of the cost, but it has not occurred to her, and i am not taken to given unsolicited advice to someone who has a fierce temper. She has one spring that is about 190-200 degrees, a fact that the mexican ranch workers exploit regularly by using it to scald chickens by dipping them into it before plucking them.

One time or another, almost everyone in the Valley has come up short on their paycheck, and Sandra floats them credit in her store. Thus, virtually everyone owes or has owed money to her, and she is easy about it. Her political base would be beyond landslide should she ever decide to take a local office, which will probably never happen as she has more tryst actions in her past than Bill Clinton, if you know what i mean, and i bet you do.

Sandra is a bud of ours. A couple New Year's Eves ago, we decided to go and party at my pig farmer brother-in-law's hunting cabin up in Oregon. Sandra's date was a midget, about 4'10", but such matters bother her none, as he could mix drinks that could cauterize one's nostrils, and that was all the qualifications he needed. Anyway, i am getting ahead of myself.

We had a great old time that night. But the sleeping arrangements were unusual for such an outing, as the hunting cabin has three big sleeping rooms, and at the end of the night, people were pretty much crashed in whatever bed they could find, except for those of us still somewhat in control of our faculties, thus i ended up sleeping in a sleeping bag near the woodstove.

Suddenly, about 5:00 AM we hear Sandra shouting and freaking out in one of the bedrooms. We rushed in to see what was wrong, and almost lost it.

We could hear this Poooooo, Tick, Shoooooosh sound, over and over, reminiscent of a Darth Vader in an agitated state.
As it turns out, this one guy that crashed in the bed next to hers has a sleep apnea problem, and has a breathing machine he uses at night.
Sandra, not knowing this, and waking up after major New Year's Eve drunken revelry, in pitch darkness, hearing this machine running..... woke up thinking she was in an emergency room and had been in a car wreck, but she felt herself and nothing hurt, so she was afraid she had died.

But she had only killed a few million brain cells, which is child's play for her, and in the end, the guy was very embarassed about his breathing machine, and the midget, who was sleeping on the floor between the two beds, (for unspecified reasons) slept through the whole thing.

Desert Chronicles (Miss America edition 1/30/07)

Well, last night miss oklahoma became the new Miss America. As they say in the Polish Forest Service, whoop-ti-dooski.

I have my own miss america items to share. The miss america for 2001 was from oregon. She just happens to live on the next farm to my pig farmer brother-in-law. Miss america lives west of them by about a quarter mile. Since the prevailing wind is from the west, and the pig farm smells bad enough to cause birth defects in humans even when the weather is cold, the fact that they live upwind of the pig farm is just proof that Mother America didn't raise any fools.

Miss america doesn't come out much, i guess the sun is bad for her, or else she has important stuff to do in the house all the time. Her husband, Mr. America, is a fighter pilot at the nearby air base in Klamath falls; he is frequently milling about in his yard, and usually in a flight suit, striking Charleton Heston poses when anyone drives by.

Mr. America seems much more sociable to the locals than his bride. One of his favorite greetings is to buzz my brother-in-law when he is out in the field on his tractor. Having an F-15 come up behind you, about 200 feet off the deck, at about 550 mph, such that one minute you are sitting there, pondering strawberries, sex, or alfalfa hay, and the next, you feel the air leave you as the compression wave hits you hard enough to lift your plow out of the ground; that is downright neighborly.

Actually, he is buzzing miss america 2001, probably waking her from an aerobics-induced slumber, but when you live right next to them, interruptions of your deep thoughts when riding on a tractor is just collateral damage, i guess.

Miss america can't travel without an escort, some sort of clause in her royal contract, i guess. she travels often, and usually takes her mother, as her husband can't have his air defense of the Klamath potato fields interrupted very often; you never know when them damned idaho guys might stage a raid.

Back the pageant last night... well, miss and mr. america went to las vegas for the pageant, as ex-miss americas are wont to do, annually. Quite a shift from the salad days of Atlantic City and the boardwalk; now its the Atlantis and Wayne Newton, but i digress.

Since Mother America got left home, she decided to have a Miss America party. Sort of like a Super Bowl party, except it is for the hairspray and pedicure set, with faint whiffs of Tupperware, but only outside on the deck. My sister in law got invited. The main theme of the party was "I am so sick of these skinny girls and their diets that i am going eat about 35,000 calories and make fun of Miss Kansas".

Mother America is a bit thicker around the middle, as middle-aged women occasionally become, thus the farm wives she invited fit right in. How such a normal, fun woman ever had a miss america spring out of her is a mystery of biological science that i will never unravel; i guess they have to come from somewhere.

The truth is, the pig farmer's younger daughter is so beautiful that she makes miss america look like a homeless street skank; but the rigors of pageant life were not for her. She married an airline pilot... which is sort of like an air force major except they make a good paycheck. The pig farmer's wife didn't raise any fools, either...

a "needs editing" blog entry

i am having lunch today at the Country Hearth, the only restaurant in town. the important thing is, i have to try get a picture of the owner, as it would bring much mirth to this board. She is a cowgirl original. She is known in town as Grandma Cleavage, and is so hilarious that i couldn't have thought her up if she didn't exist. She is 78 years old, and even though it is 10 degrees outside, i saw her walk into her cafe this morning in her normal attire, which is a pair of extremely short white hotpants, and a tube top that is several sizes too small, such that she spills out of it amply. It is topped off with a beehive hairdo. And since she is into looking wonderful, she discovered Botox early, and has had so many injections of it that most of her facial muscles are numb. She could easily be a final table person on the World Series of Poker... her expression would never tip her hand. Of course, she likes to flirt with me, and i go for it bigtime, as flirting with her pays off big because she almost always slips me a freebie piece of pie in a styrofoam container when i leave... Hell, if i was 25 years older, who knows....LOL

She has buried a couple husbands, but the present one is true gem. He is about 90 years old, and stands in the back of the exposed kitchen portion, hunched over a butcher block, making hamburger by hand. He only drools sporadically, so there is still a small market for cheeseburgers in town if the timing is right and there happens to be a tourist passing through.

The waitresses, of which there is one that speaks English, have a unique system that involves never bringing a check to customer. As it is set up and decorately tastefully as a nice restaurant, complete with a pot belly stove roaring red hot in one corner, people sit and wait for a check to be brought. if you politely sit there and don't ask, you would be there for hours. Even if you ask, you still have to go see Grandma Cleavage to pay your bill. It is very perplexing to strangers in town, as in Cedarville, we follow our own format for many things.

She has parked in the same spot for many years, probably since she got her first car. Once, someone parked behind her (our town still practices diagonal arrow-type parking on main street) and she was so in tune to her own rhythm and rut (and several tumblers of chardonnay) that she came out, hopped in her jeep and backed up, as she always does, which doesn't involve looking first. Her jeep struck the pickup truck behind her, but she didn't feel the bump, and i guess she figured there was something like snow or a mechanical failure at fault, so she reached down, pulled the lever for 4WD, and punched it.

she pushed the pickup back about a hundred feet, tires smoking on her jeep. she then drove home, not even noticing anything was wrong. Well, the pickup was lodged on top of a fire hydrant, and just like in the movies, it was emitting copious amounts of water, and was sitting in its own little lake. The cow dogs in the pickup had decided they didn't like the proceedings, and began to howl. When the cowboy came outside to get into his pickup, he was majorly annoyed.

But an old work pickup without any new severe dents is not a big deal, and as people are a bit independent here, as long as he wasn't wronged personally, no harm no foul. people don't call the cops here, they work it out.

He got into his pickup, and tried to drive it away, but it was high-centered on the broken hydrant, so he was roaring his engine and rocking it back and forth, when of course, the local deputy happened to pass by. What happened after that is not clear, as there were two sides presented in court.

One school of thought is that he deputy, widely known to be an idiot, had the black eye coming, and another is that it is not good to relieve your temper on a cop.

Either way, when i see the cowboy's hat, which now hangs in her restaurant as part of some appeasement strategy, i have to grin at Grandma Cleavage, who grins back with a smile that could melt polyvinyl chloride. Such is smalltown life.

the price of scrap metal has gone through the roof, just like anything else.

People are gathering up old cars and pickups from way out in the desert in nevada to sell them for scrap. this ticks me off, cuzz some of them are restorable old 40's and 50's cars and pickups that shouldn't be destroyed.

Scrap steel is going for over $150 a ton, which means nails are gonna get real expensive real soon. when the raw material price doubles, the retail product usually quadruples, such as what happened with flour and corn. Maybe we should invest in nail futures.

About the only thing i know of that hasn't gone up is the price of legal prostitutes in nevada. There are so many unemployed ones from california that the supply/demand thing has tipped the scales to the supply-siders. (I have never been a patron, but quite a few cowboys in town come back with massive hangovers and tales to tell, and i like to listen to funny stories) Ann Coulter is said to frequent the ones in Winnemucca, but that is another topic.

However, i have brother-in-law, a farmer, that stops there. A couple of times, i even waited out in the truck while he went in. His wife does not approve, to put it mildly. She raises pigs as a sideline. They have become wealthy beyond imagination by raising organic alfalfa to sell to dairymen.

When you wrestle pigs daily just because they need wrestling, running a bimbo off by just flexing an eyebrow is hardly a tough task for her. And she means business on that account... i bet she is the only woman on earth that has a pig crate in the back of her Lexus SUV.

A couple weekends ago, i went to his newly purchased hunting lodge in oregon, and he had a whole fleet of new quad runners, which we quickly broke in with the help of some Gentleman Jack whiskey during a quest to find arrowheads. My system doesn't approve of more than a sip of whiskey at a time, but he got so drunk that he couldn't even say "Barack Obama" during his cussword streams.

He is so republican that his neck glows red on moonless nights; he was a regular contributor to the Rudy Gulliani campaign until i told him that Rudy was a cross-dresser, which caused him to have to choose between shooting me or believing me, and since he hates funerals and would have had to go to mine being relation and all, he chose to believe me.

hey, be mellow on obama... i have it on good faith that he wrote several kick-ass term papers at harvard.

The thing is.. almost everyone on this board except the chicken hawks were against the war, too. Its easy to be against things, particularly when we don't know enough details to really have an informed opinion. Hillary had a real choice. Go with the flow and fabricated republican data that was suspect and unproven at the time, or appear non-patriotic if the real information never came out, which it often does not on wartime issues. There was a lot of testosterone flowing right about then, and we would be remiss if we do not believe that she had thought through it thoroughly. His absolutely total lack of a record, much less a record of performance under pressure, is why i am not sure i can vote for him. As in the cartoon "Scooby Doo", the younger character "Scrappy Doo" is always eager to go get 'em, but he confuses naivete' for bravery. If you don't understand the risks you take, they don't seem so bad. So far his choice in "homies" has been pretty dismal. A bomber of the pentagon and some firebrand pulpit pricks.. not exactly presidential advisory stock.

Of course the Kennedy machine owes the Daly machine bigtime, so ol' Ted hopped in with both bottles for obama. Every time I hear the question "when will the exchange reopen?" I laugh till i wet my pants. It brings to mind the first day i shoplifted a pack of gum. They were so gullible that didn't even notice i had secreted the gum in a body cavity when they weren't looking. So it just goes to show you some people just can't adapt to total sociopaths as they don't understand us.
The second most heard question is/statement is why don't we have liquidity/ wejust need liquidity The simpliest solution to liquidity are buyers. Just give us the money and shut up, and we will be as liquid as all get-out.

Now that we have determined we need buyers We must realize we only have 2 choices:

1.Natural Buyers This group of buyers have each been cold-called, threatened, referred, and given hallucinogenic drugs. In the words of P.T. Barnum, step right up and lay your money down, a sucker is born every minute.

2. The second type of buyers are Market/Makers/Brokers. These are the buyers who can legally manipulate the price, the reputation, and the attitude of the rest. We love these guys, as they only demand a small cut to deliver us wheelbarrow loads of rubes to fleece.

The PDR Exchange will focus it's liquidity on sales of a product that has a set price worldwide daily. It is a product that has been saught and held for the last 4000+ years. And i am not talking about blonde virgins. I am pretending it is gold. (we are seeking it, too, and since we don't even own any land to mine, just trust us)

i think that i don't have a protagonist to tie it together. Jake retired and now shoots ground squirrels every day, and he was the closest to a hero that i have in my vignettes. the desert chronicles have a couple items to make note of, neither of which are related in a direct fashion, but when you live on top of a geothermal system that leaves the ground so warm that it melts the snow off of your cow pasture in winter, and the water is full of dissolved heavy metals, etc., it is no wonder that some goofy things happen.

Everyone from kindergarten age on up knew, of course, that it was homocide, but no one said much; gossip is a team sport, and the players were having too much fun to go ruin the fun they were having speculating.

Not being a shy guy, he promptly bought a '40 chevy truck, which he drives in the parade during the annual town celebration, to show off his new bride to everyone in town. And since the bushy-bearded guy still had spare time from not shaving or getting a haircut, he turned the guest house into a visitor's cottage, which he rents out to tourists who lack a sense of history. How do I know when it's time for a feeding?

When should mothers express their breast milk?

Store expressed breast milk in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours. You can also store it for two weeks in your refrigerator freezer (not in the door) or for up to six months in a a deep freezer with a temperature below -18°C.
When you are freezing breast milk, do not add warm expressed milk to milk that has been already chilled or frozen. This may encourage bacteria to grow.
