Benefactor helps people at Denver homeless shelter

DENVER - Residents of Samaritan House didn’t know what to expect when the bearded, middle-aged man parked his sport utility vehicle in front of the downtown homeless shelter Christmas Eve.
The man walked into the building, pulled out a thick roll of $100 bills and began passing them out to each of the approximately 300 residents.
When he was finished, he had given out $35,000.
“It was like seeing Santa Claus and God all at once,” said William Chengelis, who has lived at the shelter since November. “You hear about stuff like that but you don’t think you’ll be there when it happens.”
As a crowd gathered, the man said he had once been homeless and knew what it was like to be in need. He did not identify himself and said only that he lived in Denver and had also distributed money at a Las Vegas shelter.
Possibly the man’s biggest single donation was $5,000 to a family of six to find housing. Louis Quezada, Tessa Wittner and their four children had been living with Quezada’s parents but were thrown out after an argument. They had been in the shelter several days.
“He asked if he gave us the money, would we get a house with it,” said Quezeda, 23. “We said yes.”

There are good reasons why Richard Ricci is the top potential suspect in Elizabeth's kidnapping. He stole from our home (and others), lied to us and never came forward with satisfactory answers to questions about his car and the missing mileage put on his car. These are some of the reasons why we believe he may have had something to do with the kidnapping. There are, however, reasons to believe that he was not the person in the house. Richard Ricci had worked in the house for almost three months and the children knew Ricci. Although it was dark the night of the kidnapping, Mary Katherine has been a consistent eyewitness. She described a man about "the height of her brother Charles" who was about 5'8" (Ricci was over 6'). He was wearing light colored clothes and hat. She described hair on the back of his hands and saw his neck between his hairline and collar. His voice did seem familiar and he seemed familiar enough that she thought she had met him before, but couldn't place him. Based off the evidence law enforcement has, no charge was ever brought against Richard Ricci for possible involvement in the Elizabeth Smart case.
About the middle of October Mary Katherine came to her parent's room and said, "Dad, I think I know who it might be." She identified a man who had worked in the home for one day in November of 2001. Lois and some of the children had met him downtown as he was asking for spare change. He was clean, soft-spoken, well-groomed, Caucasian, 5'8" tall, dark hair, and about 45 years old. He called himself "Emmanuel", but it seemed clear that this was not his real name, but had something to do with his self proclaimed evangelical calling as a preacher to the homeless. He told Ed that he and his sister were staying with someone in the valley and that they were traveling to different cities preaching to homeless. He took a bus to a stop close to their home and then walked to the house. He worked for five hours, helping on the roof and raking leaves. Law enforcement has tried to locate him, for questioning, but has been unsuccessful. This Salt Lake Police composite drawing was made from Edward's recollection from the previous year. Edward Smart stated, "We are not saying this is the individual who kidnapped Elizabeth, however we encourage this individual, as we have all workers in the house, to come forward to be interviewed by law enforcement."

6-year-old helps save family after van crash
Boy ran for help when mom was ejected in rollover accident

Six-year-old Joe Lopez is a shy boy who rarely raises his voice.

But when he saw his mother lying on the side of a road, battered and bloody after a car accident, he shouted an order: "Don't die."

And then he did something even more remarkable. On a remote road in the middle of Weld County, the tearful boy jogged for 10 minutes in search of of help, finally flagging down a passerby.

Promethia Lopez said she and Joe's little brother, 4-year-old Giovanni, survived the crash because of her son's bravery.

"He has blood on his nose, and he says, 'Mom, don't die!'" Promethia Lopez said from her hospital bed at St. Anthony Central Hospital on Monday, 20 days after the accident. "I wouldn't be alive if my son wouldn't have gotten help."

The 27-year-old Longmont mother suffered a broken pelvis, nerve damage, skull and facial fractures and paralysis on the right side of her face.

She can't open her left eye because of nerve damage, and she has trouble closing her right because of the paralysis.

On Oct. 2, Lopez was taking Joe to school in Frederick and Giovanni to her parents' house when she said her new Ford E-350 van began shaking and spinning on County Road 13.

The next thing Lopez knew, the van was tumbling down an embankment.

Lopez, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was thrown about 35 feet. The boys, who were in seatbelts, tumbled inside the van. In the mayhem, Giovanni fell out out of his belt and was partially pinned under the van in muddy ground.

While Joe ran for help, Lopez rolled as close as she could to Giovanni."He said, 'Mom, I'm all right. I'm just stuck under the van.'"

Eventually, Joe flagged down a woman driving a white car. "I told her, 'Mommy was hurt.' "

The woman drove Joe back to his mom and brother and went to get help.

Joe put a bag of clothing under his brother's head. Then he went to his mom. "I held her hand, and I kept telling her she was going to be OK," Joe said.

Minutes later, the good Samaritan returned and wrapped a blanket around Promethia's bleeding head. She was followed closely by paramedics.

"I wish I knew who she was," Lopez said of the woman.

Her two sons were treated for scrapes and minor concussions.

"I never thought he could take control of an accident," Lopez said. "I would have died."

Family uses dead child's college fund to help others

WETHERSFIELD, Conn. (AP) Alan and Carmen Dornan had set aside $125,000 to pay for their son's college education.
After 18-year-old Aaron Dornan died in an automobile accident in 1998, his parents decided to honor him by using those funds to start a nonprofit foundation and educate children who would otherwise be unable to go to school.

''He was our only child so I think that after we got through the initial shock, we said we need to do something with our lives that's going to honor him and honor his memory,'' Alan Dornan told The Hartford Courant.

In its early stages, The Aaron Joseph Dornan foundation has given away several grants. It funds programs at a Hartford shelter for women, provided a college scholarship for a Windsor girl, paid the $250 school fees for about 10 children in Haiti, and helped to sponsor two Hartford children's experience at a leadership camp.

Mounting a foundation organized around a social cause seems appropriate, the Dornans said. Aaron was known to tutor students in math and volunteered with social organizations.

He died 12 days after he graduated from Watkinson School in Hartford. He was driving home from a leadership camp in New Hampshire. It was the first time he had driven to camp, the Dornans said.

Another girl died in the accident; two others suffered minor injuries. Authorities have said Aaron likely fell asleep at the wheel.

''These people have gone above and beyond,'' said Sharilyn Miller, organizer of an after-school program, called Virtual Initiative for Peace. The Dornans paid half the $1,800 fee for the three-week camp and arranged transportation for the boys and their families. ''They are trying to give these boys the same opportunities their Aaron would have had. For that, I have given them the utmost respect.''

I couldn't find anything in the story associated with your link concerning "female circumcision." I assume it is because the link was from yesterday, and the "story" changes daily. I can't think of anything about female circumcision - actually, female genital mutilation (FGM) - that is good news, except, of course, the elimination of it.

I have seen several stories on TV concerning it and I can only say that it is barbaric and it is difficult to realize that it still goes on in the world in this day and age. I don't know the date of this "statistic", but it is mind boggling:

"....The operation is forced on approximately 6,000 girls per day, worldwide -- about one every 15 seconds. Since FGM is practiced when the girls are young, they are unable to give their informed consent....."

Missing Los Angeles Girl Found Safe at Clinic; Woman Who Took Her There in Custody

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A 4-year-old girl who vanished from a park last weekend turned up "dirty and disheveled" Tuesday at a medical clinic, where workers called police after recognizing the child and determining the woman who brought her there wasn't her mother.
Los Angeles Police Chief Martin Pomeroy said the girl, Jessica Cortez, seemed to be OK but that her hair had been cut. He said Jessica was later taken to a hospital where she was being examined and was reunited with her family.

"The mother, as you might expect, was weeping hysterically and little Jessica threw her arms around her mother and began to laugh hysterically," the chief said.

He added: "We think it will be a long time before they let go of one another."

The woman who brought her to the clinic for a checkup was taken into custody, police said. Pomeroy said it was too early to call her a suspect. He said they were still investigating the child's disappearance and whereabouts.

"Certainly no suspect has been clearly identified yet," he said.

Jessica had been at Echo Park west of downtown Los Angeles with her parents and brother Sunday night. Her parents, Rafael Cortez and Maria Hernandez, sell tacos from a stand across the street from the park.

The family discovered her missing about 7:30 p.m. Shortly afterward, witnesses told police they saw her walking with a man accompanied by a brown Chihuahua dog. Authorities said Tuesday night they were still looking for that man.

"We still have a suspect out there," FBI Special Agent Richard Garcia noted.

Police divers spent hours searching the park's murky lake as hundreds of officers canvassed the neighborhood. The city and FBI had offered a total of $45,000 in rewards.

Jim Mangia, executive director of St. John's Well Child Center - about seven miles from the park - said the woman who brought the girl to the clinic had refused to sign any forms. He said the girl was wearing shorts but no shoes and that her hair had been chopped short.

When the woman went to the bathroom, clinic staff questioned the girl, Mangia said.

"We went in and spoke to Jessica, asked her her name, she said it was Jessica - the woman had signed in a different name - and then we asked her if that woman was her mom and she said no," Mangia said.

As a follow up to my prior post, I'd like to specify the following...

A desperate search for the girls began about dawn, as authorities pleaded for the public's help in finding the girls and activated the new "Amber Alert" system, which uses radio and television bulletins and electronic freeway signs to alert the public to abductions of children.
       Gov. Gray Davis instituted Amber, an acronym for "America's Missing Broadcast Emergency Response," just last week after the kidnapping and murder of 5-year-old Samantha Runnion in Orange County. The system was used for the first time Wednesday after an unconfirmed report of an abduction in the San Francisco area.

My personal feeling is that this GOOD NEWS is directly related to the power of the computer industry and the Internet. It seems to me that the entire Media Industry is getting into the "FAST MOVE" mode and I suspect they learned that from the obvious power of the Internet in being able to quickly disperse vital information to law abiding citizens! It's nice to know that there are now ways to thwart the evil things that happen out there in a quick, efficiently swift manner!

AFLAC Rep Pays Bills for Duck

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Police say they have quacked the case of a stolen duck.

Rita Cane came forward after seeing a story in the newspaper about the stolen pet, a white duck named Peepers. She said she scooped the duck out of the street last week to rescue him. She's no ducknapper, she said.

"I'm a good Christian woman and I plan to stay that way," the 62-year-old Des Moines woman said. "I'm a good Samaritan."

Duck owner Brad Moureau said he got a call early Thursday that Peepers was safe — and that he owed $41 to get the duck out of the animal shelter.

That's when the insurance man stepped in. Bill Robertson, a regional sales coordinator for AFLAC, heard that Peepers resembles the company's TV spokesduck and that passers-by often yell "AFLAC, AFLAC" when they see Peepers in Moureau's yard.

Robertson paid the shelter's fee.

"Maybe we can make Peepers our local mascot," he said.

Scientist Touts Laser to Zap Asteroid

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian scientist said Friday that a massive asteroid said to be heading for Earth could be destroyed with the help of a powerful laser.

He was speaking after space experts warned this week that an asteroid, spotted from several different countries, could hit Earth in 2019, destroying life as we know it.

Boris Kartogin, general director and designer at rocket producer Energomash, was quoted by Itar-Tass news agency as saying the asteroid could be thwarted, using a powerful laser installation based in space.

"Defenses for the Earth can be designed," Kartogin told a news conference.

Lasers in space were hugely controversial during U.S. President Ronald Reagan ( news - web sites)'s term in office in the 1980s. His scheme to shoot down Soviet nuclear missiles was dubbed "Star Wars" after the cult science fiction film series.

The 1.2-mile wide asteroid was first detected earlier this month by the United States Linear sky survey program.

But NASA ( news - web sites) scientists are downplaying the danger of a collision, saying the odds are minimal.

Kartogin said the laser defense scheme would require the assembly of 10 to 12 platforms in Earth's orbit, which would then be equipped with powerful, chemical lasers capable of destroying the approaching asteroid.

He added that "a laser of such power does not yet exist, but the international community is already seriously talking about the need to create one."

Energomash is carrying out work on laser technology.

Scientists from several countries, including Russia, are already studying ways to defend the planet from an asteroid collision.
