What is e-waste??

1. 80 to 85% of electronic products are discarded in landfills or incinerators, which can release certain toxics into the air.

2. E-waste represents 2% of America's trash in landfills, but it equals 70% of overall toxic waste. The extreme amount of lead in electronics alone causes damage in the central and peripheral nervous systems, the blood and the kidneys.

3. 20 to 50 million metric tons of e-waste are disposed worldwide every year.

4. Cell phones and other electronic items contain high amounts of precious metals like gold or silver. Americans dump phones containing over $60 million in gold/silver every year.

5. Only 12.5% of e-waste is currently recycled.

6. For every 1 million cell phones that are recycled, 35,274 lbs of copper, 772 lbs of silver, 75 lbs of gold, and 33 lbs of palladium can be recovered.

7. Recycling 1 million laptops saves the energy equivalent to the electricity used by 3,657 U.S. homes in a year.

8. E-waste is still the fastest growing municipal waste stream in America, according to the EPA.

9. A large number of what is labeled as "e-waste" is actually not waste at all, but rather whole electronic equipment or parts that are readily marketable for reuse or can be recycled for materials recovery.

10. One metric ton of circuit boards can contain 40 to 800 times the amount of gold and 30 to 40 times the amount of copper mined from one metric ton of ore in the US.

11.
The e-waste and reverse logistics market has become a $100B+ annual business (Source: Blumberg Associates), excluding much of the resale of still usable goods that flood the marketplace as new updates in software and hardware are released. Furthermore, as environmental legislation and policies sets more stringent requirements for the disposal of these items, many analysts and practitioners expect e-waste to grow faster than any other waste stream over the next 5 years. The benefits of e-waste management and recycling are many, including conservation of natural resources, creation of new jobs, prevention of environmental contamination by toxic chemicals, and reduction of energy requirements.

E-Waste Systems, Inc. focuses on providing waste electric and electronic equipment processing services in North and South America and Europe. Its services would include primarily e-waste recycling, repair/refurbishment, and electronic asset recovery. The company repairs and refurbishes various products and materials, including consumer electronics, such as cell phones, DVDs, and televisions; IT equipment comprising computers, monitors, and hard drives; high-end communications equipment consisting of server plants; electronic lighting; electronic tools/industrial electronics; and high-end electronics used in medical and health care. Its IT asset recovery services offer a range of recovery processes comprising site clearance and removal, secure data destruction, reuse of functional units, asset tracking, and warranty and non-warranty returns services. E-Waste Systems, Inc. would also sell segregated raw materials, such as plastics, steel, aluminum, glass, and precious metals to downstream processors for resale and reprocessing into raw materials for use in manufacturing. The company was formerly known as Dragon Beverage, Inc. and changed its name to E-Waste Systems, Inc. on May 2011. E-Waste Systems, Inc. was founded in 2008 and is based in Los Altos, California.

E-WASTE SYSTEMS, INC. (‘EWSI’) QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS FROM CEO ... 12/12/13

You reported strong financial results for Q3 with continued sales growth and balance sheet. When do you expect the company to turn profitable?

Our Q3 and YTD results are completely in keeping with our business strategy of accelerating revenues, building our global brand and expanding our technologies. Q3 sales of $5.3M were nearly double that of Q2 and exceeded our announced projections, and we are very proud of the team’s effort. Since the start of the year, total sales have exceeded $8.2M and our projection of at least $12M for the full year is considered conservative. Each individual business unit will be expected to generate profits and positive cash flow and will be measured and accounted for as such.

How is the acquisition of Surf Doing?
Surf, which now operates under the name ‘CPU’ as unit of E-Waste Systems, is managed by president Julie Peterson, and is doing very well. Since we acquired them they have been consistently profitable and this year will be the first year of profits for an entire year in quite some time.

What is the true size of your organization right now?
We do not own many of the companies in our network, so their sales do not get reported under our consolidated results. And, the bulk of them are private so their sales are not visible to the public. However, as of December 2013, the total sales of companies in our network exceeded $230M in annualized sales.

There are high expectations for 2014, including the completion of the first ePlant1000 and aggressive expansion across multiple continents. What do you foresee as being the major highlights for the year, and what do you think will steal the show?
The entire company will be focused on a single primary financial objective - - to qualify for an exchange listing by year-end.

Services Overview

The following services can be mixed and matched in nearly any jurisdiction to meet your needs. Those services that we cannot provide in-house in a given jurisdiction we can source from our extensive network of affiliates, all of whom meet our exacting standards of quality, security, and environmental responsibility.

Global Collection & Logistics: Secure and efficient pickup, transportation, and storage services.

EWSI’s management team has vast experience dealing with the unique aspects of electronics reverse logistics. We offer secure and efficient collection, transportation, and storage services with detailed chain of custody tracking throughout the process. We will work with you to customize the right solution for your specific financial and security needs. For example, we can provide a variety of containers for onsite collection, audit and asset registration services on pickup, and either dedicated or consolidated routes and storage prior to processing. We can also provide site clearance and decommissioning services. Our transparent reporting systems allows you visibility and data about your shipments at all times.

Responsible Recycling: For units beyond economic repair, demanufacturing, component harvesting, and processing into segregated material streams for reuse in manufacturing or downstream refining. All according to leading environmental standards.

To close the electronics loop, EWSI takes the residual e-waste streams after refurbishment and component harvesting (as well as any whole assets designated for destruction by their owners) and uses state-of-the-art engineering to break these down into segregated material streams for processing, refining, and maximum extraction to produce new manufacturing input. We operate with a zero-landfill objective and use a variety of processes to generate up to twenty different streams of recyclate that are converted into new raw materials by intelligent and environmentally friendly downstream refining. We recover maximum value from these materials, including glass, plastics, ferrous and non-ferrous metals, precious metals, and platinum group metals. Every step in our process is transparent and documented and will stand the test of scrutiny from any audit.

Secure Data Destruction: From DOD-compliant overwriting to monitored physical destruction, the highest standards in data security. Onsite and offsite services available.

EWSI offers the highest standards in data security. We provide custom solutions, using in-house resources or those of our affiliate network, based around the following processes:

  • DOD-compliant overwriting
  • Degaussing
  • Encryption
  • Long-term storage
  • Physical destruction

Our collection and transportation services are secure and transparent and we may even be able to provide some of these data security services on location at the site of your business. In all cases, we offer documentation and certification of data removal and/or physical destruction of your IT assets, including live or taped video feeds when security demands it.

Accredited Repair & Refurbishment: Restoration of whole units to sufficient condition for reuse and resale. Warranty support and returns management services may also be possible in certain jurisdictions.

We can also offer warranty and non-warranty support and returns management services if needed. We are a qualified service provider for a wide range of electronics, using OEM or aftermarket parts. Our engineers and technicians have the skills to do board-level repair and ensure that refurbished products meet exacting standards.

Multi-Channel Remarketing: Resale of working electronics to extend useful life and recover maximum value.

Our extensive experience and relationships across multiple channels (including direct, wholesale, retail, and e-commerce) allow us to find the most appropriate buyers and recover maximum value from IT and other electronic assets.

Where security demands it, we can provide live or taped video feeds of data removal and physical destruction of your assets. Finally, we may be able help you to design reports and outputs to interface with your environmental management systems and to support your CSR initiatives.
