China Mobile (0941.HK/CHL) reported its March quarter earnings after the market close yesterday.

In the first quarter, China Mobile added 53 million 4G subscribers, a record net add. By the end of March, China Mobile had 143 million 4G subscribers. “On the current run rate we expect they will reach 320 million 4G users by the end of the year,” on track to beat the management’s own target of 250 million, said Bernstein Research‘s Chris Lane and team. 3G and 4G subscribers are now 46% of China Mobile’s total subscriber base, up from 29% a year ago.

Data continued to grow strongly. Total mobile data traffic and traffic per subscriber increased by 158% and 146% from a year ago.

Mobile average revenue per user rose 3.2% from the last quarter, better than the 6.7% quarterly decline seen in December quarter. Total revenue rose 3.9% from a year ago to 160.9 billion yuan. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or EBITDA, grew by 2.8%, better than the company’s flattish EBITDA guidance.

Shares of China Mobile’s ADR jumped 5.4% in New York. China Unicom (0762.HK/CHU) rose 5.3%. China Telecom (0728.HK/CHA) gained 4.9%.

[at Barrons.com] - Credit Suisse issued a bullish report on China's telecom sector, saying that the industry has now reached a "level playing field" which allows all three operators to make good money. After a fast ramp-up of its data networks, China Mobile (0941.HK/CHL) has caught up, wrote analyst Colin McCallum: Even with a loaded network (90.1mn 4G subscribers as at December 2014), the average time taken to upload photos to social websites and launch Youku videos is circa 3.2-4.3 seconds. This is not likely to happen because China's smartphone growth is fast enough that all three can make money: Investors who are concerned that the construction of these 4G networks will result in oversupply and a 'price war' are in our view overlooking what could be a 20-fold increase in data volumes in China. China Unicom has the largest number of towers given its market size.

Agree with you there. With the mass of whales buying VZ for its dividend today, one wonders whether they recognize that CHL dividend is even better, or at least it was when I bought as a result of a Barron's recommendation way back in 2011. Now CHL's 4G network is near completion, and the I-phones are arriving.

Add Barrons' observation[A19] that CHL is rapidly finishing its 4G network, and that a Bernstein analyst pins a PT of $67/share.
CHL is said to have 781 million mobile customers, and now has a recent contract with AAPL.

I have had shares since 12/23/2011, bought @ roughly current price, tho' it has been much higher.

FDD LTE : (Telecompaper) China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) is expected to allocate spectrum to China Unicom and China Telecom for FDD-LTE services,(Chinese media). The ministry is likely to allocate two 1800 MHz band units (755-1785 MHz and 1850-1880 MHz) to China Telecom and two 2100 MHz band units to China Unicom (1955-1980 MHz and 2145-2170 MHz) for FDD-LTE services.

TD LTE : The ministry has also allocated 190 MHz of 2600 MHz bandwidth to China Mobile for TD-LTE services, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

China Mobile to Gives New iPhone Sales a Boost

The iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C will be available from November on China Mobile, the country's biggest mobile carrier with over 740 million subscribers, according to local sources on Tuesday.

Apple released them in 11 countries including China, Japan and the U.S. on Sept. 20. At present, they can be purchased from the country's second- and third-largest mobile carriers, China Unicom and China Telecom.

Alcatel-Lucent will deliver the largest share of China Mobile's new TD-LTE trial rollout across three major Chinese cities

Shanghai, October 17, 2012 – Alcatel-Lucent’s (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) Chinese flagship company, Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell, has won a major contract to deploy the largest share of China Mobile’s new TD-LTE trial network rollout as it extends services to 10 cities. Following the new rollout as well as upgrades to three existing networks, China Mobile's trial TD-LTE network will cover a total of 13 cities.

Under the terms of the contract, Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell will deliver approximately 3,000 base stations in the cities of Shanghai, Nanjing and Qingdao, three major economic hubs of China. Using Alcatel-Lucent’s innovative TD-LTE technology, China Mobile will extend its large scale trial to launch new services in the cities early next year.

China Mobile, the world’s largest wireless operator, withcurrently over 700 million subscribers, is fast-tracking its TD-LTE deployment to match smartphone demand in China. The country is now the world’s largest market for smartphones; in the first quarter of 2012, 22 percent of global smartphone shipments were destined for China.

Soaring demand for mobile broadband access in China is being fuelled by consumers accessing video, gaming and other high-bandwidth applications. China is now the world’s largest market for mobile data services at an increasing rate of over 50% each year. To meet this demand in the dynamic economic centers of Shanghai, Nanjing and Qingdao, the new TD-LTE network deployed by Alcatel-Lucent will increase the speeds, capacity and quality of China Mobile’s network. It will also give China Mobile the ability to operate with a smaller footprint, lower power-consumption and even greater efficiency.

The rollout follows a comprehensive trial of TD-LTE technology and the signing of a co-creation agreement between Alcatel-Lucent and China Mobile in Shanghai. Since February 2012, Alcatel-Lucent and China Mobile have been developing and testing a series of lightRadioTM breakthrough technology elements. In August 2012, the companies extended this agreement by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to conduct joint nanocell research in China. Nanocells are a type of radio access technology that integrates wireless small cells with carrier grade Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) access points.

China Mobile demands Apple revenue share

Reports indicate that the two firms' talks have hit stalemate yet again, with the giant cellco aiming for a new balance of power

If anyone was going to turn the tables on Apple and its famously demanding operator contracts, it would have to be the world's largest cellco, China Mobile. The carrier has walked away from at least three rounds of talks about an iPhone deal because, reportedly, it would not accept Apple's terms and conditions or submerge its brand to that of the OEM. Now Mobile is said to be engaged in yet another round of talks, and to be demanding a share of the revenue Apple makes from its App Store.


This would be a major reversal, given that Apple initially imposed the opposite approach on early partners, taking a slice of their iPhone-based revenues. The details - reported by analyst Shaw Wu of Sterne Agee, quoting unnamed industry sources - may never become clear, but the stand-off is an interesting battle of wills, and will be important to the overall balance of power between Apple and the cellcos as the iPhone comes under greater competitive pressure from Android devices.

On the one hand, Apple acknowledged at the iPhone 4S launch that it wanted to go after emerging markets and the huge user base beyond high end smartphone markets. In this quest, China Mobile has a huge number of subscribers, a large percentage of them poised to make the leap from 2G featurephones to 3G, and so is clearly essential to Apple's objective (even if it has to develop specific TD-SCDMA versions). Mobile already sold 5m iPhone units in four months on the basis of consumers using Wi-Fi only, and therefore without 3G support or any formal agreement with Apple.


However, because of its off-center 3G platform and its plan to use TD-LTE rather than the more common FD-LTE in future, Mobile lags behind its rivals in the choice of high profile handsets it can offer its users. As operators in many markets have seen, adding the iPhone can make a big difference to customer attraction and retention.


China Mobile CEO Wang Jianzhou, who said in 2008 that Apple's desire for control was enough to wreck any agreement, has therefore softened towards the firm recently, especially hinting at a TD-LTE iPhone to boost the cellco's claims to be building a strong TDD handset ecosystem. Earlier this year, he met Steve Jobs and said it was a "common wish of China Mobile and Apple to come to an agreement as soon as possible". He added in a recent interview: "We hope Apple will produce a new iPhone with TD-LTE. We have already got a positive answer from Apple." But, like so many US giants before it (Qualcomm comes to mind), Apple may find that China is the market where it has to change its usual ways of working and make significant compromises.

Should CHL be buying stock in IDCC (Interdigital)--or even the whole company. This IP company has thousands of patents covering wireless technology.
It has a tangible net worth of $6 per share. At $44.45 per share, the implied value of its IP is about $1.7 bil.
Some weeks back an auction of Nortel's patent portfolio fetched $4.5 billion. The analyses I have seen indicate that the IDCC IP is worth more than the Nortel IP.

China Mobile Eager To Roll Out 4G LTE Service

China Mobile (CHL) looks poised to mark a 12th straight year of profit and revenue growth. While the wireless giant's growth has slowed over the past decade, it still boasts superior profit stability, strong cash flow and a solid dividend.

Such characteristics are vital, especially during a time when investor confidence in Chinese public companies has been shaken.

A number of small- and midcap Chinese stocks trading in the U.S. exchanges have been decimated by accounting fraud concerns. Earlier this year, shares of software firm Longtop Financial Technologies were delisted from the NYSE after it faced accusations of artificially inflating sales and cash on its balance sheet. The firm's chief financial officer resigned in May.

Hong Kong-based China Mobile posted $72.2 billion in 2010 revenue, up 9% vs. the prior year. Earnings grew 6% to $4.38 a share, and operating cash flow rose 9% to $7.78 a share.

While the company continues to add customers, the wireless handset market appears to be maturing. So China Mobile has focused on boosting its data-related services to increase its average revenue per user. It's currently rolling out a fourth-generation (4G) platform, called TD-LTE, in six cities plus Beijing on a trial basis.

China Mobile announced first-half results for 2011 on Aug. 18. According to a company presentation, wireless data business revenue grew 43%. Value-added business revenue rose to 32% of total sales.

The company now has 35 million customers using its 3G network, which allows for Web search and data transmission in addition to regular cellphone service. Research In Motion (RIMM), maker of the BlackBerry, came out Tuesday with a smartphone model that works on China Mobile's TD-SCDMA network. The Bold 9788 has Wi-Fi connectivity and GPS capability.

As of July 31, China Mobile had 621.85 million customers, adding 5.06 million customers for the month of July. Year to date, it's added a net 37.8 million customers.

China Mobile has a three-year earnings stability ranking of 2 on a scale of 1 (most stable) to 99. The annual dividend yield is 3.6%. The stock has formed a saucer pattern.
